In Massachusetts, State Schools are funded by the Taxpayers. You are correct in that instate residents pay less than outside residents. Since UMASS is funded by the state, that means the campus police is also a State police.

But, those who earn a degree from the taxpayers finance tend to contribute more to the community that those who do not. The University of Massachusetts did a study that everytime the government gave 1% of the loans to students when the student graduate, they contribute 7% more to the community.

Mass is trying to pass a law right now to allow illegal aliens to pay in-state tuition rates. Legal US residents have to live in Mass for a year to get the same rates.

And for the apologists that say illegal immigrants pay their fair share.........THEY PAY LITTLE TO NO TAXES, GET FREE HEALTH CARE AND UNDERGO NO BACKGROUND CHECK OR MEDICAL EXAM TO ENTER THIS COUNTRY.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

Similar to the free/low cost MA health inurance. A legal immigrant has to be a MA resident for 5 years in order to be elibible, but an illegal pregnant woman is eligible for free care.

Reason Wisconsin gives a break to in-state students, a good hunk of our property taxes goes to the university system. With Bush and Iraq, state claims they were not getting our income tax buck back from the feds, so had to increase both property taxes and tuition. Not seeing any relief from Obamba, but since 9/11, these rates have gone up drastically.

When the government says education is a good investment, what they mean is that, the kids will get higher paying jobs, so the IRS can tax the hell out of them, and even have offered some grants to help. But those grants come with strings attached, student has to maintain a minimum GPA or they are liable to pay those grants back, and have to, since they are normally over 18 years of age and legally liable for it.

Taxes have also risen due to increased police protection, not sure about that protection, but sure have to watch how fast you are driving and never roll at a stop sign. Also enjoy the extra protection at airports.

It's hell being in the middle or upper middle class, when taxes are paid, you are actually in the poverty class. But we are safe.
