Okay, my wife just filed her I-485, along with the EAD & AP. We just go the letters from the government w/reciept #'s. So, excited to have that first step out of the way. I just had a couple of questions on whats coming next.

First of all, when we went to the SS office to file for her SS card, the SS office noticed that her Birth certificate said "copy 1" on it, like it was just a photocopy. I was shocked that we only had a copy of her birth certificate and not an original(or at least notarized). She insisted that it was notarized, and that they got it from the government. Well, anyways we sent that with her I-485. Well we had her brother retrieve another copy of her birth certificate from the government, and send it to us. When we got it, it also said "copy" on it. Also she said that she used the exact same thing for her I-129F interview. I am almost certain that this is the only copy we have been able to get but the SS office wouldn't accept it as proof of identity. We were able to get the SS card based on other ID's but I'm just worried that this birth certificate is not going to be enough for the government. So, I understand that the I-485 only requires a copy of the Birth Certificate, but they can request(possibly at the interview) the real notarized copy. This is the only notarized copy that she knows of. She shows me the stamp from the government....but that could just be a copy too because there is no indentation.

So first of all, how would I get a copy that would be considered legal in the United States, if thats the only copy she is able to obtain from the government in the Philippines. Also, has anyone else experienced this problem? I'm just worried about an RFE or that they'll want an acceptable copy at the interview. They have accepted this same copy through all the steps of the I-129F though. So I am not sure what to do.

My BC and my son's BC has the same note above its right corner "Copy 1 of 1". But is is considered original because we got it from the NSO office. "Copy" means we have secured a copy of the orignal BC that is compiled in their vaults.

The SS office should not ask for the birth certificate as proof of identification but rather ask for her passport. Passport is the valid and accepted government issued identification that is accepted here in the US.

I was wondering why they asked for the BC as proof of identification.

The aunthenticated BC that she got form Philippines is enough when you show it on the AOS interview.

Keep it with you and have extra photocopies of it.

They asked for mine and my son's BC and showed them our original copies, he asked if he can have it, but I gave him photocopies of it instead because I want to keep my originals, and the interviewer accepted it.

Don't be worry about it, as long as you are submitting bonafide documents you are good to go :)

GOD BLESS YOU BOTH!

Thanks alot for the confirmation on that. Yeah, I guess we messed up because we just submitted the BC as the proof for SS office. They almost used it, but realized it was a copy and wouldn't accept it. Thats when we realized that it said "copy 1 of 1". Yeah we had her brother send multiple copies of the original just in case. Feels good to know that its not just us. Yeah, it also has the NSO on it.

Yeah, I'm not to worried because they accepted it for everything else in the process. Its just good to be careful. Thanks for your help & support. God bless you too!!

You dont 'need' an NSO birth certificate to obtain a Philippine SS ID card. They will not likely accept that as proof of identity anyway.

HERE is what they really require:

An active SSS member with at least one monthly contribution and SSS pensioners may apply for the new SS ID by filling out and submitting an SSS Form E-6 to the nearest SSS branch that has facilities for SS ID capture.

SSS Form E-6 must be submitted together with any of the following primary documents:

Passport

Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) card

Seaman's book

In the absence of any of these documents, the applicant may present any two of the following documents, provided at least one document contains the applicant's photograph:

Driver's license

Valid National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) clearance

School or company ID

Postal ID

Senior citizen card

Major credit card

Voter's ID

Savings account passbook

Alien certificate of registration

Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) member's record

Certification from the Office of Southern/Northern Cultural Communities or Office of Muslim Affairs

Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) card

When you submit your application, the SSS will immediately obtain your personal data (i.e. your fingerprints, facial image, signature, and personal identification number will be electronically recorded) for transfer to your new ID card. The ID card will be mailed to the address you specified on your Form E-6. If you do not receive your ID within 30 days from the date on which you applied, you may inquire from any SSS branch in your area.
