My fiance was born in India in a state called UTTARANCHAL.

A few years ago, the entire country of India officially changed the names of several cities and states.

The state of UTTARANCHAL is now officially known as UTTARAKHAND.

However, my fiance's birth certificate states she was born in UTTARANCHAL.

What state name should I put into the application forms? My fiance currently does not have a passport and she is applying for that as well.

I want to make sure the state name is consistent throughout the entire process. Since these are USA forms, I am thinking the USA will recognize the new official name. However since her Indian passport is not yet made there is a chance it might be issued with the old name of UTTARANCHAL - and not the new name of UTTARAKHAND. People in India does not seem to recognize the new names as easily as we would in the USA.

Any help is appreciated.
