Basic info to start a journey

I am in a relationship with a man who is a British citizen but is now living in Australia. He has been there about 2 1/2 years and will become a permanent resident in November. I need some basic information on the Visa processes. He has two minor children. We are thinking of marrying and he and his children coming to the US to live, maybe only for a few years then all moving back to Australia, or maybe living here permanently. I have no idea how any of the visa process works.

Would it be better to get married first? In which country, US or Aus?

How does sponsorship work? I make just over $50,000/year.

Would he be able to work here? He has a degree.

On his end, will we be dealing with Australia or UK? He is a British citizen about to receive permanent residency in Australia....

He will deal with Austrailia because that is where he currently resides.

Actually, on his end, he'll be dealing with a US Consulate in Australia. Neither the Aussies or Brits have anything to do with US immigration.

He'll work seversl months sooner and it will cost significantly less money overall, if you marry first (wherever you choose) and follow the CR1 visa route.
