Can someone on a J1 visa work off campus even if he is a student?

* Got married in August 2008

* initial interview in March 2009

* Green card received in May 2009

* Divorce January 2010

* I-751 filed April 27 of 2010

* Biometrics was supposed to be July 1st but I did a walk-in June 16 2010

* I don't know what's next

I think the answer is NO. Officially a J1 visa is not for work, but to do an internship like of a thing, and is restricted to only that one place you will do this. I almost got in trouble when I was her on a J1 and they asked me at the POE what I did here. I responded "working" and got a huge lecture on not being allowed to be employed with an J1. Officially you are a foreign student performing student related activities in the US so also not an international student in the US (you would have an F-visa)!!

March 4, 2010 ... received Bio letter

March 15, 2010 ... bio appointment

March 16, 2010 ... touch

May 12, 2010 ... card production ordered

June 1, 2010 ... card production ordered text message (again)

June 7, 2010 ... received green card

February 15, 2011 ... mailed N400

February 17, 2011 ... N400 delivered

February 18, 2011 ... check cashed

February 22, 2011 ... NOA dated

March 24, 2011 ... bio in Houston

May 20, 2011 ... interview San Antonio

June 30, 2011 ... oath ceremony Bryan
