Canada is an awesome place to live if you're middle class and not in great health.

That is why I laugh when I see right wing commentators saying the rich will leave if the US increase taxes. Yeah right. They would have to go to a third world country to pay lower taxes. Whereas, they would pay out of the wazoo in most other first world countries. Hence, the first world status.

Yup.

I have quite a bit of family in the Toronto area and they don't have any of the health care worries we do here in the US. Without getting into personal details, the issue of health coverage has been a huge worry for me and my family this year. I know that had we been living in Canada this transitional period would have been much easier on all of us.

Make the move if you can. I am always looking for options, although getting married and a piss poor economy has limitted mine quite a bit lately.

I've investigated it. If I got a job there and moved, it would be some time before I could petition over the family member with the health insurance predicament. By then, she'll be close to or at the age for Medicare eligibility anyway.

I wonder why Windsor, Canada could be so crappy. Oh wait, they are next door to Chernobyl 2.0. Heck if you gave me a choice of Chernobyl or Detroit, I would take Chernobyl. You have a better chance of surviving radiation than the streets of Detroit. Not to mention it looks better.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

Windsor is paradise compared to Detroit. And there's that international border to keep the riff raff out. Even then, Windsor cops are plenty busy but I never felt unsafe. Yoots in ghetto cars don't freak me out. Not until I hear what sounds like firecrackers but ain't, that is.

You have a better chance of surviving radiation than the streets of Detroit.

Erm no, you don't.

Well it is embarrassing that a city abandoned 23 years ago after being bombarded with radiation looks better than a US city currently being lived in. Yet we are supposed to be this super duper, mega rich superpower. Sure as hell doesn't look like one, let alone look like the country first slogan. Looking at Detroit, it looks like country last to me.

PS I would have a better chance of surviving a year in Chernobyl than 2 months in Detroit.

It was the longest period of peacetime growth in US history.

Absolutely. There was no other peacetime period where any President managed to triple the national debt. What a growth record! Not sure it's something to be particularly proud of, though.

1981: $ 997 billion

1989: $ 2,857 billion

Shoot - Obama's done that with the budget deficit... Obama makes Reagan's debt look like child's play.

Without getting into personal details, the issue of health coverage has been a huge worry for me and my family this year. I know that had we been living in Canada this transitional period would have been much easier on all of us.

All jokes aside, if I or my wife came down with any serous illness, we would be on the next plane to Aus. Knock on wood but I'll be damned if I am fighting something like cancer and having to worry about whether the insurance will play games and deny it.

I have never been to Canada and was checking it out on google streetview. The country is phenomenal and a great example of what paying taxes does in terms of quality of living. I challenged some repubs at work to find my a street in America that looks as well taken care of as some of the average Joe Canadian streets we were looking at. Quite frankly, anyone denying the huge success for the average Joe in Canada or Australia, is a delusional idiot.

You're basing your knowledge of Canada on google street-view?

No. The Australian education system actually teaches us that there are other countries outside that of our own. Amazing right!

Google streetview is a great tool to look at the actual condition of Canada and compare it to the US, like Michigan. To look at Europe and see that Repubs are full of #######. To see what collecting taxes does (Vancouver) compared to not collecting taxes (Chernobyl 2.0 - aka Detroit). Maybe you could even use it to look at Aus and compare what us conservatives there have achieved for a country of 22 million. Hint: total opposite of Detroit.

Even someone using crayons should be able to at least acknowledge the huge disparity. Not to mention, which one is better for the average Joseph.

Isnt Australia about the size of Detroit. Point being the USA is huge and consists of alot great places that you wont find in detroit. Have a look at Sisters Oregon, Bend, Redmond... You have this bad image of america and thats all you want to see
