The only form of socialized medicine at all in the US is administered through the VA.

that's an earned benefit, not socialism at all.

Take a deep breath, Chuck. Socialized Medicine (term used to describe systems where health care is administered and delivered by the government) is not the same as Socialism. No need to break out the red flag just yet just because you are a beneficiary of a socialized medicine scheme. Nobody is disputing that this is an earned benefit.

you're still young enough to earn that benefit ;)

... the fractured, private insurance model we currently have is the mother of all failures.

You sound like you're channeling Saddam

Wasn't Saddam a socialist too? :o

Only in the sense that he idolised Stalin to the point where he copied his mustache.

He was also evil. Socialists are evil too. There's another similarity.

Man is made by his belief. As he believes, so he is.

Impossible. Ask Joe. Socialized medicine will never pass.

Well - it won't - because that's not what is being proposed.

That doesn't change the fact though that Joe doesn't understand what socialized medicine is.

I know, I know. My point was that socialized medicine actually has passed long ago and exists in the US today. Same goes for public health insurance schemes. So, to make a claim that either will never pass is simply ignoring the very reality we live in.

Reinhard - We don't have socialized medicine in the US. Medicare is not socialized medicine. It's a government administered payer.

I am aware of the difference. In the VA system, however, we have a model where the government administers and delivers health care - i.e. the docs and nurses actually work for the government. That's what one might refer to as a "socialized medicine" scheme somewhat similar to the UK's NHS.

I know you know the difference. I'm hoping if we keep talking we can get Joe to understand what a socialized system truly is.

Even the VA isn't true socialized medicine - because it serves only a segment of society. A true socialized system serves all.

From my readings, the only true model of socialized medicine on the planet is the NHS.

We never talk about this, but there was a 'system' of insurances from the early 1900's till the NHS went full blown in 1948. It didn't cover nearly enough of society - sound familiar?

Germany actually manages to provide very generous social services (including a very good public healthcare system with supplemental private insurance) while keeping the infrastructure in a very good condition.

They even offer comprehensive programmes (medical, nutritional and psychological) to help obese people to lose weight.

sounds like a great country for the lazy.

in other words, a socialist paradise.

Put it this way - public money over there appears to be better spent than it is here.

i disagree. enabling the lazy is not a superior policy objective. dropping a bomb on a camel is.
