PARIS (AP) - A French gay soccer team says its members were victims of homophobia when a team of Muslim players refused to play a match against them.

The Paris Foot Gay team says Tuesday it received an e-mail from the Creteil Bebel club canceling a match scheduled for last Sunday.

"Because of the principles of our team, which is a team of devout Muslims, we can't play against you," the e-mail said, according to Paris Foot Gay. The e-mail received Saturday said, "Our convictions are much more important than a simple football match."

Paris Foot Gay said in a statement that it asked the amateur league to sanction Creteil Bebel.

I wonder if they scrutinise the backgrounds of all opposition players before deciding that they can't play against 1 team because the goalkeeper is behind with his taxes or another because 2 of the midfielders participated in an orgy.

Somehow I doubt it.

More detail from the AFP:

"Sorry, but because of the name of your team and in keeping with the principles of the team, which is a team of practising Muslims, we cannot play against you," said the e-mail, according to PFG's co-founder and current president Pascal Brethes.

It added: "Our convictions are stronger than a game of football. Sorry to have informed you so late."

...

An unnamed representative from Creteil Bebel said in a local radio interview they would not back down.

"We're sorry if anyone feels insulted. (But) as a Muslim I still have the right to decide not to play because I don't agree with their philosophy," said.

what a bunch of bologni. I wonder if Muslims -this is an honest question- are even allowed to play soccer. Or is it haram?

I would imagine it's ok for men as long as they dress properly and take breaks to say namaz. For girls same thing except I'd think guys couldn't be in the audience.

Why do they have a right not to play because they disagree with a philosophy.

Surely the philosophy is secondary to the fact that this is fundamentally a football team.

Don't know too many religious people, I take it? Religion drives every aspect, every decision, for a lot of people.
