California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has joined other prominent Republicans in supporting Democratic health care reform legislation.

"As Governor, I have made significant efforts to advance health reform in California," he said in a statement. "As the Obama Administration was launching the current debate on health care reform, I hosted a bipartisan forum in our state because I believe in the vital importance of this issue, and that it should be addressed through bipartisan cooperation."

Schwarzenegger is only the latest in a series of well-known GOPers to express such conciliatory opinions. In an interview with Time magazine last week, former Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist said he would vote for the Senate Finance Committee bill.

Former Republican (now independent) New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg also praised the plan on Monday. "The health reform proposal that Congress will shortly consider is shaping up to merit broad, bipartisan support, incorporating Republican ideas and earning deserved support from Republican leaders," he said in a statement. On the same, day, President George W. Bush's Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson said the Senate Finance Committee bill "moves us down the path of providing affordable, high-quality health care for all."

These folks know that the GOP is essentially maneuvering itself into a position where they will be perceived as the problem rather than the solution, where they deprive themselves of any opportunity to shape the reform that everyone with a brain knows is needed and good for America. Too bad that the GOP has no leaders in Congress.

After 10 months of power, what makes you draw that conclusion, oh soothsayer?

We're going to have an election in a few weeks to elect a Governor. Ever since the Republican challenger (Christie) declared, he's been on top in the polls. Day after day, week after week, month after month... Christie was up, Corzine was down.

And then we had our first debate

Christie came off as a spoiled frat boy who hated being questioned. He spouted off standard GOP talking points about being anti-choice and saying he would remove consumer protections in the health insurance marketplace as a means of reducing premiums.

In todays poll... Christie's numbers are dropping like a rock. An Independent who did well in the debates has taken on some points, as has Corzine and the net-net is.. Corzine is now on top.

A few months isn't much but it can be a lot.

Ok... if one example makes you feel good, then so be it. The dems will still be pounding cement after 2010

NJ is not a bellwether state for national politics so a single race there is as meaningless as life in NJ usually is.

Exactly. Today's GOP is taking the pulse of and basing it's course on important places like, say, Buttfcuk, AL. That's where Sarah Palin's "Real Americans" happen to live.

Life in NJ is not "meaningless".

You must have missed this. I didn't claim it was a bellwether.

The example doesn't make me feel good about 2010. But it does show how quickly things can change.
