No, she should not be 'let go'. How do you get there from what I posted? My point clearly was that if it is as a result of post partem depression (although it could also be drug related, stabbing yourself and your baby is clearly not something one does simply because one is a bit frustrated regardless) then one can hardly blame this incident on the current state of the USA or somehow believe this incident illustrates how American society is going to hell in a hand basket.

Not going Cleo. Gone.

This is just another failure of freedom of choice, with everyone else now forced to pay for the consequences of this individual's various personal choices.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

post partem depression is a very real thing..

it is not an excuse, it is a plausible explanation as to why this mother did what she did

I would go more with post-partum psychosis. That one is the real b1tch.

Whichever the terminology, it is devastating to hear ####### like that happens :(

No, it's not about excuses, it's about explanations. I think it's absolutely awful for the baby obviously, being hurt by your primary carer is shocking and terrible. Sadly, post partem depression, or psychosis (thank you Amber) is not a new phenomena and it's about time that something was done to help mothers who suffer from these problems before they do this kind of disturbing and horrific things as illustrated in the OP. Blaming it on the depredation of society as a whole helps no one at all, least of all the victim.

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

Sounds like post partem depression which is very year 2000.

:rofl::rofl: Here come the fvckin excuses!

I don't think Cleo was excusing anything; but certainly someone who does such a thing HAS to be pretty fvcked in the head. Which does not mean they should get away with it.

No, if it is post partum depression/pyschosis it illustrates some of the very big holes in health care, particularly as relate to mental health and sadly women too.

This happened all the time years ago, right pike?

Yes BY - there were no infant murders in the 50's.

Keep tooting that horn, Moron.

####### you guys. Seriously, could you make your respective points in another thread? Or do we make this tragedy into yet another #######-slapping contest? #######.

Len - I totally agree that it is a horrible story.

This is actually the 3rd thread today that BY is using to troll this stuff. I should probably just report it as baiting.

ah okay. Things are just so tough now. The past decades were just a walk in the when compared to the struggles of 2009.

I didn't relatavise at all BY. I am suggesting that the solution might be in better health care though, and more research into these types of psychosis.

Q: In the 19th century, a woman who experienced depression or discontent was likely to be diagnosed as "neurotic" and subjected to treatment ranging from vibrators (to induce orgasm) to clitoridectomy (to ensure that she never had another one again), with various talk, drug and institutional therapies in between. In the 1950s, a neurotic woman might find herself undergoing electroshock therapy, or, if she was lucky, she might be offered the sedation of Valium. Today, the depressed housewife is likely to find herself on one of the new antidepressants such as Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil or Wellbutrin.

Yeah the history of psychiatry is studded with that kind of thing. Kind of what happened to the woman in that Clint Eastwood movie.

here's some more info too

What Is Postpartum Psychosis?

While it is the most extreme form of postpartum mood disorders, postpartum psychosis is also one of the rarest. Usually described as a period when a woman loses touch with reality, the disorder occurs in women who have recently given birth. It affects between one and two women per 1,000 women who have given birth.

Unfortunately, though many women with the disorder realize something is wrong with them, fewer than 20% actually speak to their healthcare provider. Sadder still is the fact that often postpartum psychosis is misdiagnosed or thought to be postpartum depression, thereby preventing a woman from receiving the appropriate medical attention that she needs.

Women who do receive proper treatment often respond well but usually experience postpartum depression before completely recovering. However, without treatment, the psychosis can lead to tragic consequences. Postpartum psychosis has a 5% suicide rate and a 4% infanticide rate.
