I think this must just be a strange American phenomenon, or a strange VJ phenomenon - where people keep going back and comparing what the last president did, or didn't do with what the current president is or isn't doing.

What is the value in that? This ####### for tat stuff is kind of ridiculous.

First of all George W is not coming back to be president. This I know. So how does comparing what he did with what Obama is doing - mean anything?

The only conclusion that I can come to is that at some point the government of your country encouraged this to keep you all occupied spinning your wheels while they did, whatever it is that they do.

Time to focus on what is happening now.

It's a way of shifting focus I think, from the abysmal performance of the person in the oval office. Apologists are famous for it. They can't defend what's going on, so they point fingers backwards. A political you momma.

No, it's that from the day that Obama was sworn in, the Right Wingers have been trying to deleglitimize his presidency. He didn't really swear in, he's not really an American-born citizen, he's a Muslim, he's a Socialist, he's a Communist, he wants to take away your guns, he wants to indoctrinate your children, Michelle Obama spends too much money...the list goes on and on. Even for those who didn't vote for him or agree with his policies, at least there have been a few lone voices who have called this nonsense for what it is. It's divisive and it's not helping this country.

But let's not confuse legitimate criticism from the bullsh!t. Although this list of Obama's accomplishments is weak, it is a fair subject. But that's when past presidencies are relevant. For example, some Right Wingers have complained the Obama has increased the national debt exhorbitantly, but were silent when Bush undid Clinton's accomplishment of bringing down the debt and to this date, has added more to the national debt by any president since WWII. Selective criticism is what this topic is about.

The climate in this country does seem to be somewhat poisonous these days.

Only because it seems that way, and the media puts it in your face. Things are still pretty mild by historical norms.

Well usually things seem one way because that's how they really are.

I'm sure the media is to blame for some of the hysteria, it usually is.

Not that VJ is a barometer of the country's politics, but I do think it is odd that so much time is devoted to each and every spurious headline that pops up.

It is a way of wasting time for sure, but I learn new things everyday in the process. But, to your main points, until we get the riots we had when I was a kid, and the 82nd Airborne patrolling the streets, it is just a lot of whining on all sides.

You can't lump all criticism of a sitting president together. Yes, there's been hysteria drummed up by both the Left and Right as a means to motivate the American people, but how many Republican First Ladies were thrown over the coals because the the kinds of clothes they wore or over which restaurants they ate at? How many Republican Presidents had the very legitimacy of their presidency questioned? FDR's detractors did call him a Socialist, but how many Republican Presidents were labeled Fascist by a major media outlet? Never before in our history have we had a major media outlet operate as a Right Wing propaganda machine with a clear agenda of destroying the legitimacy of the presidency. The level of sleaze from the Right has reached a new low...and underneath is an element of racism.

Ovomit and his wife need to learn a thing or two about protocol and dress, the guy does not get it, he is constantly not wearing a suit or a tie and with unbuttoned shirt and rolled up sleeves which says not much for him taking the office seriously at all. And for his wife, whether she likes it or not she is not bigger than the office and yes she is expected to show some class and respect for the office none of which she cares to do therefore she shall be ridiculed a lot. Some people just do not get it, they are not back in the hood of Chicago but on the national stage, and their are expectations.

I still think your perspective clouds your memory. Nancy Reagan was the subject of ridicule in the press, as was Hilary Clinton in her former role. The days of Camelot ended with Woodward and Bernstein.

The left complained the same way they do now, as does the press, when Clinton became President. Things look different from the inside looking out, than they do from the outside looking in.
