Ariz. budget report says shortfall could hit $1.5 billion

Legislative budget analysts agree that the shortfall in the current state budget could hit $1.5 billion.

Gov. Jan Brewer's budget director recently told The Associated Press that the shortfall could reach $1.5 billion.

That would be above the legislative analysts' most recent estimate of nearly $1 billion.

But the legislative analysts' latest monthly report now also says the shortfall could reach $1.5 billion.

The report released Wednesday cites revenue collections that continue to fall below projections and questions about whether budget maneuvers will actually produce expected results.

August revenue collections were down 12.7 percent from August 2007, the 13th consecutive month of double-digit drops in General Fund revenue collections.
