I'm surprised only 33.3% of Detroit city residents are living below poverty.

I think it is more like 70%. Just based on years of observation, knowing people that live there, house values, etc.

Well the criteria is a bit of a joke. A family of two, with two children earning under $21,834. Not even one person could survive on that. Raise it to the realistic $50K, and I bet it would be 70%.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

Yes, HHS poverty limits are a joke. That we use those numbers to determine who meets Affidavit of Support requirements for immigration ensures we admit people every day who will end up being wards of the state.

I hate that sort of trickery because it does not show the true numbers. It does not show what is quite evident to someone from another first world country. So while my bud Danno beats on about superpower and how awesome the place is, the ridiculously high level of poverty is quite evident to most of us from abroad; from first world countries.

This lust for the quick buck and for cheap prices has really screwed up the country. It's why you have millions upon millions living in poverty and are just so stupid. In this respect, I agree with Michael Moore 100%. People have allowed the mega rich to transition this country into a second world, where the top 1% are mega, while the majority are quite poor. For every success story some like to use as an 'example of entrepreneurship' and so on, there are 10 people who are living in poverty.

It's a freagin joke, that's what it is. You have people beating on about superpower yet half the country does not have a pot to piss in.

In most communities, all I see is pockets of rich surrounded by poor. The middle class need to get their sh-t together, as do the poor. Then again you have people against health care reform, that will directly benefit them, but are too stupid to realize this; so I don't see anything happening.

Yup. It's a shame. Some of the most conservative people I know have ####### jobs and aren't financially secure. It's nuts.

 Don't hate me just because I am rich and your are a working class moFo that lives in world's armpit.

I am poor, I can afford to give you nothing more than my unending and eternal hate.

Your telling me. I would understand someone who is directly benefiting from private corporations or worth a minimum $50 million beating on about keeping their money whatnot but what we have in the US is your Joe the Plumber, $50K salary types, beating on about protecting the wealthy.

I blame you libs for that though. You have made higher education so expensive that it's out of reach for the majority of the country, therefore, many are severely uneducated. The Northerners also kept the South poor and stupid, which the entire country is now paying for. They're great people but they simply do not have a clue. Then you guys empowered the cough cough ghetto, as such, the bottom of the barrel in society now think they're the sh-t but never actually earned it or achieved it. Presto! = USA 2009.

Tell me that's the problem after you've addressed the high school dropout issue.

Southerners don't need help being stupid.

I cannot say the Northerners were strategically any smarter since in their attempt to empower the ghetto, t backfired and they overran your cities and turned them into cesspools.

Talk about karma.

High school dropout rate is not going to change but only get worse. TV here, something kids live and sleep, is filled with dropouts making $$$. From rappers, to athletes, to Kardashisans to even house wives of Atlanta. So what message do you think this sends American kids. be a douche and you can still succeed. If not, you will just resort to crime and selling drugs.

This is why, much like a google, apple or Microsoft came from nowhere and from nothing, a unknown ex convict country has come ahead and bitched slapped the entire country. I cannot wait for Matt to hear that the reserve bank in Aus may have to raise interest rates because house prices are creeping up again. Yes even in this world economy.

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.
