Kimberly "Kimi" Young, 22, died Tuesday night Sept. 22, 2009 at University Hospital.

OXFORD — Friends say the Miami University graduate who died this week after reportedly suffering from swine flu delayed getting medical treatment because she did not have health insurance.

News of Kimberly Young’s death Wednesday, Sept. 23, came as a shock to those who knew the vibrant 22-year-old who was working at least two jobs in Oxford after graduating with a double major in December 2008.

Young became ill about two weeks ago, but didn’t seek care initially because she didn’t have health insurance and was worried about the cost, according to Brent Mowery, her friend and former roommate.

Mowery said Young eventually went to an urgent care facility in Hamilton where she was given pain medication and then sent home.

On Tuesday, Sept. 22, Young’s condition suddenly worsened and her roommate drove her to McCullough Hyde Memorial Hospital in Oxford, where she was flown in critical condition to University Hospital in Cincinnati.

“That’s the most tragic part about it. If she had insurance, she would have gone to the doctor,” Mowery said.

While I am sad to hear that she died of the swine flu, I dont see how that just bcz she didnt have insurance is "proof" that she would have lived or died either way. I am thankful I do have health insurance BUT... even when Im sick I hardly go to a doctor... and if its flu symptoms I usually take niquil/dayquil, lemon juice, honey and lots of water, gatorade and soups. (then again thats just me)

(F) Poor girl.

Graduated college and working 2 jobs, neither of which provided insurance?

You know, you save a sinking ship by letting those who can't pull their own weight go overboard.

She obviously wasn't working any real jobs...not too bright for a double major.

hmmm just bcz people have insurance doesnt mean they go to the doctor everytime something happens or does it? Lets say I got the flu and choose not to go to the doctor bcz I try to save money live better and use all the things I said in the previous post... having insurance doesnt mean that a person is going to go to the doctor and that if they do they are saved from the swine flu or any other virus spread about.

Maybe she had useless majors like art history and communications.

The world is better off.

Her friend believes she didn't go to the doctor because she was worried about cost.

Of course, you could choose to disbelieve him if that better suits your pre-existing ideological condition.

sounds like a stubborn girl then... if she had the flu or something like it and could have went but still worried about the cost, isnt that worth your own life? I thought that doctors, or hospitals could or would take payment plans... surely she made some kind of money that even if she paid $25 a month to the doctor it would have been worth her going???

I guess she was an idiot. We're better off without her. Right?

Never said better off without her, I do feel bad that she died from the swine flu. BTW, alot of people do dumb things, maybe her NOT going was one of them.

Yeah. We make access to an essential human service difficult and cost-prohibitive and then when people react to the difficulty in the manner we know they will.... we call them dumb for doing so.

Doesnt mean that as a last resort I wont go to a doctor for the flu, but I dont usually go bcz I try other things for the first few days.

Maybe she *was* trying the at home method for the first bit. What else could she possibly be doing?
