Relativism seems to defy the very nature of truth; namely, that truth is not self-contradictory.

There are plenty of contradictions in the Book of Genesis.

For example: where did Cain get his wife? In Leviticus 18 the Bible strictly forbids interfamily marriages

(brothers and sisters, fathers and daughters, etc.) Either Cain was living abominably, or there were other

parents besides Adam and Eve.

Genesis 4:

25 And Adam knew his wife again, and she bore a son and named him Seth, "For God has appointed

another seed for me instead of Abel, whom Cain killed."

Genesis 5:

3 And Adam lived one hundred and thirty years, and begot a son in his own likeness, after his image,

and named him Seth.

4 After he begot Seth, the days of Adam were eight hundred years; and he had sons and daughters.

5 So all the days that Adam lived were nine hundred and thirty years; and he died.

We are not given any names of Adam’s sons except Cain, Abel and Seth. Seth’s birth is a consolation to

Eve for Abel’s death and the scripture is written in this context. Seth was not the third child but was the

first son born after the death of Abel. There was a hundred and thirty year window in which other children

were born. Genesis 5:4 that says "and he had sons and daughters" as an closing note not as a declaration

that daughters were born after Seth only. Within that 130 year window of time, children other than Cain

and Abel were born. Cain’s wife was definitely a close relative, probably a sister.

Did Cain (and all other children of Adam and Eve) commit an abomination before God by intermarrying?

No. Intermarrying was a common practice in ancient times and even in modern times in some cultures.

Cain took his wife 4,000 years before the law was given saying intermarriage is a sin. Abraham’s wife was

also his sister. They had the same father but different mothers. Abraham also sent his faithful servant to

his own family to find a wife for his son so that Isaac would not be influenced by the culture around him.

Cain clearly married a close relative and was innocent before God.

Did God’s moral law change? Why did God declare intermarriage a sin in the law given through Moses and

not consider it a sin for the first 4,000 years?

Yes, when someone interprets it to be a factual account of the beginning of Creation.

There are plenty of Christians in this world who do NOT regard the story of Creation as a factual account of history, but as allegory. People such as Cain are mere symbols.

Symbols of what? If the Bible is not a factual account of history, then it's a work of fiction

and needs to be classified as such.

In all fairness though Gensis is an intro. It rightfully had its place for the last 4,000 years. It is clearly metaphorically speaking.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

There are some historical facts represented in there as well. The ancient Hebrews weren't too concerned about factual accuracy, but moral truths. I don't know anyone short of Fundamentalists who would argue that the Bible is factual front to back.

So

I went to a Buddhism 101 class last night at a local centre.

just 'cos...

I'm a curious soul. :D

And it was so interesting to me that although they of course like every group want to grow their numbers, they insist you question everything.

Look at it.

Look at it again.

See how it works for you.

Do not take anyone's word for anything.

For example, they talked of buying gold without testing it.

You'd want to know it's gold before you invest, no?

They do not discount anything.

They do not simply accept anything.

Develop a healthy doubt.

Develop a certainty but do not feel "right". (which = arrogance)

Live and let live.

Kindness before determination.

Describe not prescribe.

I'd like to add my experience:

remain open to it all

love and accept differences

there is only the here and now, so be present and update

dogma is for the ignorant

karma is here now

get over yourself (hahaha)

check your ego

see for yourself

Rules:

1. Be kind.

2. See rule 1.
