Good call, get to know the area better before you buy. In the long run 8K really isn't much at all. I am frankly surprised that an amount that small spurred so many people to borrow (most borrow, a small number actually buy) an asset worth so much more.

Not everybody lives in metropolitan areas. It's a considerable sum in lots of places.

That just ain't right.

People used to work their butt off to save that $8,000 for a down payment and now it's just given to them.

It's unfettered socialism!

I thought socialism was supposed to be about fairness.

There's nothing fair about giving free money to someone who just happens to be buying a home this year.

Ask a person who bought a home last year how s/he feels about that.

RJ, and actually the area I'm moving to; 8000 would be a ton. Home prices there are nothing. Monroeville - rent is dirt cheap so i'll be ok that way for a while. I just hope the company doesn't think that warrants a pay cut (again).....

Wow, you've had your pay cut? I can't imagine what that must be like. How very unfortunate. You have my sympathy.

Yeah it sucks. Not as sucky as actually losing the job. For that i am thankful. I understand the company is in survival mode. It just sucks to be anyone in the automotive industry right now (unless you're Kia or Hyundai). I'm thankful I was chosen for transfer. Many of my friends here are getting the boot at the end of the year (they've been notified).

I am glad it's worked out for you so far. There isn't even a semblance of an auto industry where I live so I just hear about this stuff online from people like you.

Luckily I work for a Japanese supplier that supplies wiper systems to GM, HONDA, NISSAN, and hopefully Chrysler and Kia soon (we're trying to get the business)

I work in the research and development department on Honda products. Honda ain't doing so hot either in this environment, it just seems that the Japanese know how to make their companies survive the worst of the worst.

I was all set to buy my house and was real excited... then whammo.. Oh well, good thing i didn't buy before I was notified of the transfer.

I bought a home in late 2007.

It doesn't bother me. I had a first time buyers loan in the past. FHA too. Just because I can't get EVERY benefit that comes down the pike, I'm not going to cry about it.

It's also a false economy in some place, where I live house prices are still dropping double digits
