It's too bad that they had to squeeze in those politically "correct" "pledges," because most of this video was really good. It was sending some really good messages to children. And I could even tolerate the political correct content. It was pretty innocuous and didn't really marginalize anyone from not such "politically correct" ideologies. But WHY WHY WHY did they have to support the cult of personality. That last image was frightening. It reminded me so much of the kind of propaganda that was used in China during the Cultural Revolution and in the Soviet Block during the 50s and 60s. It suggests that we are each little atoms making up "the Great Leader." They even accompanied that with the words to suggest the same in case you were a little too savvy to be swayed by the visual, or vice versa. Even the illustration of the President is in the Communist Realist style. It would be almost comical if it weren't so dangerous.

I can see there is going to be a big overreaction to this video. I agree that it should NOT be shown in schools unless they take that cult part out. But it isn't the worst thing that has been shown/taught to them in the name of political correctness.

But I can also see the absolute blindness among those on the opposing viewpoint about the frightening aspects of this sort of indoctrinating propaganda of the cult of personality. I predict there will be complete denial that there is anything wrong with this video.

One of Right Wing Nuts favorite buzz word....indoctrinate.

I you missed the part in history class how both the Nazis and Communist took over education systems to indoctinate kids to a political ideology. Since you don't who the Young Pioneers were, you just didn't get the joke there. I wouldn't say the Obama video is as extreme but using celebs to influence kids their soft brainwashing "I pledge" mantra repeated over and over is clearly over the line.

Funny how no one defends the slavery in America #######. The guy kissing his arms as he speaks of Obama was some kind of message but I'm not sure what.

I take it you've never listened to the Red Hot Chili Peppers?

Back in WW2, the U.S. used propaganda to rally support for the war. Dubbya did the same for the war in Iraq. Unless you are consistently opposed to all forms of political propaganda, you're being selective.

Nov 1988: Ronald Reagan spoke to students, telecast on CSPAN. In q&a talked about opposition to gun control and other issues.

Link.

I absolutely agree that the bulk of this video was harmless and that a lot of the reaction against it is overreaction, but did you miss the last bit? Did it go over your head? If that final image weren't a picture of a human being, but of a map of the US or the flag, or disembodied holding hands, or a garland of paper children, etc., then it wouldn't be so offensive. Imagine if that were an image of Reagan at the end of that video. Wouldn't it turn your stomach? It would turn mine. I would be right there with you saying this was going too far. It is classic, text-book, indoctrination in the cult of personality. When does the 50 foot statue of Obama go up on the hill?

I liked some their songs. I assume that was Dave Navarro (?) but still doesn't explain the kissing himself while uttering Obama's name.

WWII wasn't controversial in the U.S. and I don't remember the Bush video of him telling kids to his little lobbyists. I don't want political propaganda taught in school especially to little kids. You probably wouldn't notice the political message from public school teachers since you'd probably agree but I'm sure you wouldn't like it if I was kid's teacher pushing my agenda.

If you want you kid bombarded with politics, find a private school to your liking or homeschool your kid. It's just that simple.

Indoctrination is the process of inculcating ideas, attitudes, cognitive strategies or a professional methodology. It is often distinguished from education by the fact that the indoctrinated person is expected not to question or critically examine the doctrine they have learned. As such it is used pejoratively.

Actually, if you think arguing semantics negates the argument, then I have to question your cognitive skills. Either you are trying to avoid the discussion because you have no legitimate response, or you really believe that this ends the argument. Either way, you totally miss the point.

Hey did I see Punky Brewster in there? It was refreshing to hear what Michael Strahan said about pledging to see himself as an American rather than an African American.

I think it sent out a good message for the most part. Nobody really disagrees with that I would think, well except maybe the stem cell research. Its how it begin and ends that had me scratching my head. To make this about Obama makes it political, jeez lets let our kids enjoy there youth before they have to start dealing with that #######. Why couldn't it be a pledge to our country or a servant to our country.

A lot of the lefties here would be up in arm if it was Reagan. I think Steve pointed out something Reagan did durning his presidency. Steve I dont think you would support that, why this?

Well said.

COL Gila Monster couldn't find anyhwere in the article where kids were asked to question the video or critically examine the beliefs of the celebs. He proved it was an indoctrination video with his own supplied definition. He was too busy "serving" Obama to think not everyone would agree with all the messages the kids were bombarded with.

Semantics? Are you kidding me? It's not bloody indoctrination by definition. It is propaganda though...which is what rubs some people here the wrong way because the message doesn't jive with their political ideology. The word, indoctrination, is nothing more than a buzzword used by the Right Wing to justify their selective outrage. An example of real indoctrination of youth would be David Koresh and the Branch Davidians....or that group of polygamists where the men were marrying girls as young as 14. That's indoctrination. It's just sad and really pathetic for some incapable of understanding what it is and recognizing it when it actually takes place.

LOL...I give up. Some of you are either being deliberately obtuse or you really haven't a fvcking clue what indoctrination really means.

Again, you are arguing the meaning of the word as though the meaning negates the argument. If it is indoctrination according to the definition you have stated this video is not good, but if it is not, there is nothing wrong with it. But let's go ahead and argue the semantics. Here's a definition you did not include. It's the first definition, which is the most common meaning according to how dictionaries are composed. (In case you didn't know that.)

in⋅doc⋅tri⋅nate  /ɪnˈdɒktrəˌneɪt/ –verb (used with object), -nat⋅ed, -nat⋅ing.

1. to instruct in a doctrine, principle, ideology, etc., esp. to imbue with a specific partisan or biased belief or point of view.

2. to teach or inculcate.

3. to imbue with learning.

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/indoctrination

There is no controversy between the meaning given above and with the way you claim the "Right Wing" uses this word in this instance, or, in fact, with the way the "Left Wing" has used and still uses it when referring to "Right Wing" actions. So your argument about this not being indoctrination and your argument about the intelligence of those who see this as indoctrination is shot.

But let's go with your definition of the word. How do you think David Koresh began his indoctrination of the youth? Jim Jones? Stalin? Mao? Or did the latter two not use this method according to your opinion? If you can't see some of the language used in this video and especially the last sequence with people chanting in unison as they shrink and disappear to be assumed into the image of a human being as indoctrination, then you have been indoctrinated. At the very least, you can be expected "not to question or critically examine" this video.

Here is the definition of inculcate (second definition above) in case you don't know it.

in⋅cul⋅cate  /ɪnˈkʌlkeɪt, ˈɪnkʌlˌkeɪt/ Show Spelled Pronunciation [in-kuhl-keyt, in-kuhl-keyt] Show IPA

Use inculcate in a Sentence

See web results for inculcate

See images of inculcate

–verb (used with object), -cat⋅ed, -cat⋅ing. 1. to implant by repeated statement or admonition; teach persistently and earnestly (usually fol. by upon or in): to inculcate virtue in the young.

2. to cause or influence (someone) to accept an idea or feeling (usually fol. by with): Socrates inculcated his pupils with the love of truth.
