“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

What is this for exactly? Can anyone explain? Thanks.

It's for Canadians living abroad, it's wise to register with your local consulate. In case of emergency, disaster, etc. they have a record of you living there. I registred when I got here.

Thanks for the reminder. I tried to log in, and it said they didn't know me, so I just re-registered. However, after filing in some of the information, they wanted other information such as my travel dates. I did give them one travel date, but I'm thinking that this is something I should be updating every time I travel I guess. I'm sure I'm not going to remember to do that. I thought it was perhaps just the Connect2Canada database or something. Not so.

You can say you are staying long term. I took it has I am living here long term, so I put the date I entered into the US and left the end date open ended and checked off the box that says long term.

Dome - When my friend when to Costa Rica, her passport and all her money and credit cards was robbed from her... well she was able to get to the Canadian Consulate and since she had registered with them before she left on her trip, they were able to issue her a new temporary passport very quickly, give her money and help her find a hotel (she was supposed to leave the day it got stolen, but then couldn't because they needed a couple days to issue her passport).

Thanks for the responses guys. Are there any downfalls to NOT registering or not registering right away?

Well the downfalls of not registering just mean you're not on record as living/travelling abroad as a Canadian citizen, and if you needed assitance from the local consulate it could take longer to get help
