I recommend calling about once a week. I don't know how busy your embassy is but, I was told the same thing and turns out the embassy in Peru is not so busy. As a result I received an interview date after the 2nd week of the month even though they said they only schedule the 2nd week of every month. So it would be worth while to call once a week if you want to know as soon as possible. I also received an email copy of the interview letter. I think this is because I emailed my DS-3032 so if you did the same you should receive an emailed notice.

call the NVC at (603) 334-0700 they are open from Monday through Friday from 7:30 AM to 12:00 AM (EST). I recommend calling between 730am and 8 or after 9pm. Remember there are alot of people calling to get information on loved ones and often the lines become busy. There is an option to speak to an operator. Select that and you will be asked for your case #, petitioner's name and date of birth, beneficiary's name and date of birth. Hope that helps.
