AJ,

A bit OT but we just met with some of my wife's relatives last night who are vacationing here in Cali - and they're from Jersey. The husband is Chinese/Filipino but born and raised in NJ and he works in IT. Anyhow, they were saying how shocked they were over our 9% sales tax....said that clothing, OTC medicines, diapers, etc. are all tax free in Jersey. I was a bit surprised to here that. They also wanted to know why we charge for plastic bottles.

Yup, we have no sales tax on clothing and food. By food I don't mean packaged delicacies but produce and milk and eggs, the basics. I didn't realize otc meds weren't taxed.

There was a time when we had no state income tax either, that was the time when businesses from NY were rushing into NJ. Today we have an income tax and businesses are fleeing to PA instead.

ps. charge for plastic bottles? what do you mean?

We have a CRV surcharge on various plastic bottles. For example, a 2 liter of Coke has something like 7 cent surcharge, but if you return your bottles to a recycling center, you'll get cash value for them.

Steve, when you have people from New Jersey (of all places) suggesting you are paying to much in taxes..... you know your state is in t-r-o-u-b-l-e.

Thats song was about 2 minutes too long but I suffered through to get a glimp of the "shore".

If you go to Seaside heights, and try to get on the beach, they have a scanner to check your hand for an invisible stamp that you must pay for.

We never paid, we always licked our palm right before you put it under the scanner and it worked every time.

Wow! That sucks. My little cottage in the woods only costs me around $1K in property taxes. Plus, no wise guys, just hippies, assorted fruits and nuts, and other fauna. I know folks that own property in Texas, and their property taxes suck big time as well.

At least in Texas you know why the property taxes suck, there are few other sources of revenue. They don't have a state income tax, do they?

In Jersey, they're just high. No one quite knows why.
