What I do when nobody is looking is hum the King's anthem:

You hear it so much that it's like burned into your ears.

I found myself doing it at the Vanderbilt YMCA this morning in NYC.

This doesn't have to be the only topic in this thread, but we can start here.

I'm aware of that thread and it's a good one, but I thought we might have 2 Thai centered threads,

yours for visa related questions unique to Thailand and this one for any other non-visa related item

relevant to Thailand. It wasn't my purpose to replace that other thread.

I expect yours to attract more posts in any case over time.

You're very welcome. One of my friends over on the Philippine board called me "Dr. Phil"

but I'm not a therapist or psych professional, just someone who's been through the emotional mill.

You may have observed I had a trying time with my Japanese wife, but in an effort to resolve them

I did seek therapy and still could find no way to change her. My main therapist who also remains a

friend to this day didn't encourage me to divorce, but I made that decision and many others on my own.

I was the classic "deer in the headlights." I was such an emotional basket case that I didn't

file income taxes for almost 3 years.

Then I met an acquaintance at the YMCA who was an accountant and he pulled me from the

abyss with minimal penalties. This wasn't magic or sleight-of-hand, but I made a committment

to work with him, giving him the information he needed and we worked as a team with letters,

phone calls, etc. to the IRS.

I also had the support of another friend who was also going through a trial with his teen son.

He was "smokin' grass and cuttin' class.' That by itself was not a big deal, but he was screwing

up his life in many bad ways. Once he attacked his father and then tried to claim "child abuse"

when the cops came. The cops could see clearly who was under the influence of something.

He was in and out of every kind of rehab and "program" you could imagine, but the finally my friend

and his wife had 2 federal marshals collect him and take him on a plane to Mexico for a SERIOUS

residential rehab program. It took them about 3-1/2 years to set the kid straight, but that was

with mandatory counseling participation by both parents. It was from this friend that I learned

a lot about conflict resolution concepts. I would talk to him about my wife and he would not just

agree with me, but tell me where he thought I was being unreasonable/unrealistic and in need

of looking at it in a different way. Those concepts paid off for him, because his son is doing very

well today, while many of his ex-teenage friends ended up dead due to drugs or gang violence.

Karaoke? Wow that's a serious crackdown.

The matchmaking service right smack in the middle of the article was a nice touch too.

Maybe they'll be regulating next how much water a water gun used during Songkran can hold.

hmmm....should I buy a single shot or automatic?

Here's the Wiki on that ---

If you scroll down, you'll see Thailand under "countries with current lèse majesté laws"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/L%C3%A8se_majest%C3%A9

Lèse majesté = don't mess wit da king

I think the current king has been quite a good influence over the years, but sometimes I

do a double-take when I see behavior that approaches worship.

My better half loves the king, so I won't be getting into arguments there.

Make love, not war.

i saw that movie in the theatre w/ some thai friends and they both got loud, angry and pretty vocal in the theatre ultimately walking out about 45 minutes in. (the remake w/ Chow Yun-Fat and Jodie Foster). they refused to watch the old one saying it was probably worse. i would imagine it wouldn't go over well if you're "caught".

I saw it and was so mad at it too. And I did some research about it and it comes out that Anna was actually problably have never even spoken to the King - so it's mostly her made up story. It's also funny how the 'king' danced around like a monkey  have they ever actually seen our custom or Thai dance? I think I saw the original one.. The king was supposed to be King Rama VI...

it was pretty offensive in that the implication is that the monarch of thailand would have relied on a western woman as a confidante and that he seemed "simple" in the movie. my friends that i went with are very mild mannered guys but this really angered them. i have never even thought of asking my husband to watch it.

I think a smart and wise man can learn from both male and females. I think the movie over all shows King Rama VI to be a smart and wise King not bound by the way things where done in the past...
