You can receive an RFE at any time - before OR after biometrics. In that event, they will mail you a letter. You would also receive an email if you sign up to follow your case online via https://egov.uscis.gov/cris/jsps/index.jsp

When I received an RFE, my online status didn't change, it was only a letter in mail.

The RFE is sent for which they think they have insufficient documents or proof. Most for divorce I-751 waiver cases or cases which pending due to processing backlog and when the case was being processed. USCIS either lost the documents or thought they need updated documents.

If you sent good set of documents then you don't need to worry.Since you are VSC, now a days they are approving cases on average of 3.5-4 months. So if it's close to 6 month or over 6 months and you didn't hear anything from then VSC. then you should inquire about your case.

Good Luck.
