My wife and I were married in Lithuania last October and we then filed for visas for her and her daughter at the end of December at the embassy in Vilnius.

I believe when my wife was going through the visa interview in Warsaw she was asked if she wanted to apply for a SS card. She answered yes for both herself and daughter, and her paperwork reflects this choice.

They arrived in the US on June 7 (had visas in March, waited till school was out) and just 2 weeks later my wife received her SS card in the mail. It is now 2 weeks later and our daughter has not received her card. Is there a reason her card should be arriving later? Should I be worried and making phone calls/inquiries?

Also, just a few days ago both my wife and daughter received their Permanent Resident cards but they are white in color and will expire in 2 years. Is this because of their conditional status, and they won't receive the permanent card until after their AOS?

If I understand correctly, we don't apply for the AOS until within the last 90 days before they have been here for 2 years?

Thanks in advance for any help. :-)

Dave

What status did they arrive here as? If they arrived as permanant residents and your wife checked off on the DS-230 to be assigned an SSN, I want everyone on VJ to take note that the process worked.

The child will have to submit an SSN application at an SSA office. They need the parent(s) SSNs to give to IRS, so the DS-230 process doesn't work for minor children.

They got 2 year cards because you have been married for less than 2 years. It's removal of condition (I-751) that needs to be filed before the cards expired and you can submit it anytime within 90 days of the cards expiring. The child can be included on the same filing as you wife, so you only need to submit one form and pay one fee.

What I suggest that you do is get a folder and start sticking in there anything you think you can use when you file, i.e. utiity bills in both names, credit card and bank statements in both names, papers from loans in both names, basiclly anything you think proves you are married and living together.

Yes, they did arrive as Permanent Residents, and she did check the box on the DS-230. It worked.

I appreciate the quick answers. I did some more research that verified a person under 18 will not automatically receive a card and must apply at the SSA office. My wife was pretty stressed but the replies given here have convinced her that all is well.

Thank you.

This part is interesting. I was previously married to a woman from Europe and at our 2 year interview we brought all kinds of information/bills/photos to help prove our relationship. The examiner did not want to see any of it. NONE. His only concern was to see some evidence that our son's father had given his permission for the boy to immigrate, or to see proof the father was not involved in the boy's life. In fact, the father never saw his son as a divorce occurred before his birth.

Thanks again for the assistance given on Visa Journey.
