Have questions before starting K1 process

Hello everyone: Currently I reside in California and my boyfriend in Dominican Republic. We have been best friends practically all our lives but started dating this past December. I know that one of the things that I will need to submit will be proof of financial support and that is where my question is. Last year income tax was not that great and this year I think the same thing will happen. :( So my question is: what is the minimum a person needs to earn in the US to be consider financially stable? I also have a teen son who I fully support by myself. Also if I want to get a co-sponsor does the co-sponsor need to live in the same state as me? Thanks in advance for your help. :)

You need to make 125% of the federal poverty guideline for your case. For a family of three, you'd need to make at least $22,887.50/year. Any assets you have count only as 1/3 of their value. If you don't have some huge assets stored away and make less than $22,887.50, you will need a co-sponsor. It doesn't matter if the co-sponsor lives in another state.

It may just be the terminology that you are using, but K1 visas are for fiancees, not "boyfriends." You will need to swear that you are going to marry this person within 90 days of his entrance into the United States.
