Who has booked a one way flight for their SO on these airlines, I was told if I purchased I would have to be flying also.

my suggestion is that to ask the person who's flying to purchase the ticket at the ticketing office of the airline. i believe any of the online reservation needs the purchaser or card holder to be one of the travelers. good luck.

i remember my hubby went to the ticket office of the airline to buy the ticket, because there is some problems if you do it online. After he got it, he e mailed me the itinerary, that's why I don't have any problems with it.
