Once a year won't work because that tax bill will be huge. Deception is a necessary part of pushing any new tax through, 52 weekly payments of $10 each is less painful than a single payment of $500.

They can send you "estimated" bills once a week and then give you a refund when they check your actual odometer reading.

I know electric utilities do that, but they base their estimates on actual history.

When I first moved in, I had no history.

Most people drive 10,000-15,000 miles a year - there's your estimate.

That would hit fleet owners hard.

It would hit them one way or another.

Estimated taxes weekly or monthly + ability to submit odometer readings to a website for better estimates + yearly odometer inspections

- still a lot cheaper and less intrusive than GPS tracking millions of cars or networking hundreds of thousands of gas stations.

I don't see why they need to install a GPS in my car when a once-a-year odometer check would suffice.

yeah the last thing i need is for the government to keep track of where i go. we know how secure the government keeps records!

and the last thing i need is for nessa to know how often i go get pizza.
