Does anyone have recent experience with trying to get an Indiana drivers license on a K-1? Do you have to wait for the greencard? I read the information on the BMV site, and it just made me confused. Any advice would be great.

I applied when I had my EAD and SSN and proof of address and they accepted it. I re-applied again with my 10 year Green Card because I want to have the 6 year Driver's License :D

08/02/2016 - sent I-130 application for my parents via USPS Priority Mail

08/05/2016 - Priority Date

08/08/2016 - NOA1s Notice date

08/09/2016 - NOA1s text message and email received

08/10/2016 - money orders: cashed

08/13/2016 - received NOA1s in the mail

08/24/2016 - touched

12/27/2016 - Cases Approved! (148 days or 4 months and 26 days total)

01/12/2017 - NVC Welcome Letters Received (Case Number + Invoice Number)

01/13/2017 - Completed DS-261

01/25/2017 - Received IV Fee

01/26/2017 - Paid AOS fee

01/30/2017 - Paid IV Fees

02/03/2017 - Completed IV and AR Application

02/23/2017 - sent NVC packets via USPS Priority Mail (note: I have to wait for my mom's police certificate, so there was a bit of a delay before I can send the package)

02/27/2017 - packets received at 11:30 am signed by N Visa Center

03/01/2017 - Scan Date

05/06/2017 - Case Completed

05/12/2017 - NVC scheduled the interview!

06/02/2017 - Medical (06/14 to 06/15 - Dad's Sputum Test)

06/16/2017 - Mom's Interview Date (Approved!)

Did you try at all to do it before the EAD? Its gonna be probably 4 or 5 months before we get that, and he is here already so it would be really helpful if he was able to get his license...

Yes I did, but they didn't accept it :(

Edit to add: You can call your local BMV about this. Also if he has his international diver's license, he can use it for at least 6 months. That's why they told me at their Evansville, IN BMV office :thumbs:

Hi, I live in Indiana right now with my husband. Moved here 2 weeks ago and have been a frequent visitor at the bmv. First, to get my car licenced. Now I'm studying for the written test. All they needed from me was my passport, proof of residence and ssn. I was encouraged to get my driver's lisence right away, that's my experience.

The Lord is my strength and my shield,

When we were registering my H's car, I was told that I couldn't apply for my DL until I had my GC, even though I had my SSN etc. However you should be able to drive on your UK license for up to a year or until you get our GC (this is what I did). Then when I received my GC I was told I had to get a Leaners Permit and had to have that for 60 days before I could do my practical.

I did my theory test when I applied for my Learners Permit.

I just did my practical two weeks ago, compared to the UK test it was a piece of cake!

I would call your local DMV though and check with them though.

FYI I did mine on the southside of Indianapolis.

I couldn't apply for my SSN without my EAD :( so I have to wait for it and used my international driver's license.

can i ask what BMV you went to?? if its close enough to us it would be worth the drive..

That will be what gets you. You either have to have a valid I-94 OR an EAD.

If you have a valid I-94, is the license only valid for the time the I-94 is valid?

ok...we went today, and they said that yes, you can get a license on a K-1, no permit needed. He is going to study for the written test and hopefully when we go back the story will be the same!
