Balikbayan Box in the plane

If you're going to go thru the trouble to spruce up a bb box with a cover, consider getting regular luggage. There are huge suitcases that are just as large as a bb box, they're just rectangular instead of square. It will already have wheels and you can use it over and over again. A bb box is only good for one round trip use, have no handles or wheels and are prone to ripping open. BB boxes seem to be unique to pinoys and surely the bane of luggage handlers..

Hello to all pinays here who travel to USA...I planned to leave last week of this month to USA and i a losing hope of sending my things in the courier here in PI most of them give me vauge answer... I need your help now guys, I was thinking na lang to bring my balikbayan box with me, the dimension of the box is 20''x20'x20 and it weight about 33 lbs . it is possible to bring it with me and have it checked in? how much do you think will be the cost for the extra baggage and its excess? hope someone tried this path and share some info...thanks in advance.

i just returned from the phils 2 days ago. on asiana airlines u r allowed to bring to boxes not exceeding 50 pounds each. and a carry on bag i believe it was no moe than 20 pounds. remember no meats, vegies, fruits, seeds and u should be good. u.s. customs did open and go through my box in my presence so be ready and aware of everything in your boxes. i hope this helps.

my husband brought longganisa and tuyo back to US the last time.. and i want to bring Pampanga's Best tocino also when i leave.. do they really open ur boxes?

How did your husband able to bring longganisa? was it cooked already? i am just curious :)

I used 1 balikbayan box and I have 1 luggage and as of my hand carry, I have 1 big purse. The size of my balikbayan box is the same as yours but I bought this balikbayan box cover from balikbayan gear.

bbox.jpg

I think I paid Php700 for that cover pero it is sulit naman kasi i don't need to put packaging tape around the box to protect it saka incase na may question sayo ang custom kung ano laman ng box mo eh you can easily open it. It is hassle free as you can just unzip the cover and open the box unlike if you are just using the box eh you need to put packaging tape again after the custom's inspection but i hope na syempre na wala kang maencounter na custom prob :star:

There is a cover that has 4 wheels at the bottom so you can easily just pull your box and that is more convenient. It cost Php1500 so it is double the price. But what I did to save is that I bought that Php700 cover and my dad just bought 4 wheels in the hardware and he installed it at the bottom part :D I think I paid Php100 for those 4 wheels. O di ba nakasave? :P I saw kasi kung ano yung itsura ng wheels so I know what kind of wheels to buy. Yung wheels nya eh yung prang sa cabinet or drawer na wheels. Maybe you'll think na it is kinda pricey pero the quality of it is sturdy naman at talgang pangmahabang byahe at pwede po pa naman cya gamitin ng maraming beses and I find it very convenient in traveling.

Oh btw, here is their website. I bought mine in SM. Their product was also featured on tv.

Anyways, i think i should stop na as I look like one of their endorser na  I am just one of their satisfied customer lang po :P:D

 I had this too for my 2 balikbayan boxes.Pink is right, hassle free lalo na sa U.S.Custom clearance kc they will let you open your baggage,so mag-box kna lng and bilhan mo ng balikbayan gear pra zipper mo na lng sya.

By the way ,nag-exceed din ako before, bale $25 ang fee and Continental airlines told me that I can exceed upto 32kg with that fee.I exceeded 1 luggage and 1 balikbayan box so I paid $50.Better call your airlines,kc minsan iba din ang nsa website nila.

Happy Trip.

Pink is right,pounds/lbs. dito, hndi kilo..kaya mamahalan ka tlga kc konti lng kumpara dyan sa atin na kilogram.

I was given an advice before that if you use luggage, the customs will never open it. Unlike in boxes, there is always a possibility that they will ask you to open them. I always use luggages and never had a problem with them and never even ask to open my luggages.

I suggest for you to use a luggage.

lately, marami akong nakikita sa mga airport na nagdadala nung bags na gawa sa sako. Uso na kasi dito yan, at matibay talaga sya at classy na rin (although some prints are cheap or Disney-type), unlike the traditional bayongs. I'm just wondering if they will fit the baggage requirements and if they will be strong enough for the trip. Pero iniisip ko, kung tumatagal ito sa mga nagbabyahe sa bus papuntang mga probinsya, siguro naman, tatagal ito sa planes.

Any experiences, or advice?
