Applicant's own funds instead of I-134

I know this question has been asked and answered here before, but I cannot find it. The packet 3 I got from the Dublin Embassy states that I can use my own funds to meet the "public charge" provisions of the law. The problem is, they do not give any indication of the amount required. I would rather not find out during the interview that I need a I-134 after all...

Has anybody tried using his/her own funds ? How much was needed ?

The fact that you even have doubt, should be enough for you to go ahead and get an I-134. If your SO doesn't have enough funds, then go ahead and get a co-sponser now. Keep in mind, you still have AOS to worry about. Don't just focus on getting the visa, think about the whole picture.

As for numbers, the I-134 doesn't call out any actual requirements, but the I-864 requires 125% above the poverty level.

Better safe than sorry. Good luck!

self sponsoring - AFAIK its usually a minimum of £5,000.. the more the better obviously. I can't find anything written DOWN though 'officially' - I think its def not common to ALL Embassies, but I know London allow it as well.

I think pax and ewan (VJ members) considered going that route - you might try and PM one of them tho I'm not sure if they have been on VJ for a couple weeks.

Actually, I am pretty confident that I have enough money. The problem with I-134 is that getting it would take two more weeks.

Better safe than sorry.

Exactly ! That's why I ask :)

I did a bit of research on the Usenet, and most answers were in the £1000-£6000 range... which is perfectly fine for me :) I only hope that the Dublin embassy requirements are not much different.

I might just call them on Monday and ask :)

B.,

It's a subjective issue. I wouldn't be surprised if you get very general answers to questions you ask the consulate until the consular officer processing your visa application sees the specific information that you present describing your financial situation.

Well, I called them. Contrary to what they state in Packet 3, they DO require I-134 to be filled by the USC fiancee. Applicant's own funds may be used in addition to that.

Fortunately for us, it just means a slight delay... and I am stuck in Dublin until September anyway.

Bartek,

For what it's worth, and despite what you were told, people have successfully applied for K1 visas at the US consulate in London without requiring a sponsor, using their own funds only. It's far from common, but it has been done.

Yes, I am aware of this. Apparently different consulates have different policies. And there is always the possibility that the person I talked to did not know the answer and decided to err on the safe side.
