Its a common stereotype that "asian types" are bad drivers.

actually, that is quite true for inexperienced asian drivers, and inexperienced drivers of other nationalities, as well.

funny story:

my wife has a friend in china who, like my wife, bought her chinese drivers liscense from the grocer who sells very expensive eggs across the street from the "driving department". if you go into this place and tell the owner you would like to buy the most expensive eggs he has, which are about $200 a dozen, and give him your national ID card for a day and a spare passport type photo you can pick up your "eggs" the following day.

wife's friend picks up wife in her new car one day and takes her shopping. along the way the local cops were running a "liscense check", which is a euphamism for salary enhancement effort. her friend, not knowing that the usual toll was 100 Rmb, ran the stop. unfortunately, she hadn't learned how to get into 2nd gear yet, so one of the cops ran up alongside the window and rapped on the window with his cell phone to make her stop.

some brief discussion later, including phone calls to various friends within the driving department, the issue was settled with coupons for several free haircuts at the driver's beauty salon. when my wife volunteered that she was married to the laowai with the yellow hair and beard that drove the chinese motorcycle with the funny blue liscense plate that says pennsylvania, and that he had contacts within the driving department, too, much laughter ensued. such is traffic and law enforcement on the roads of Luoyang.
