It's fairly obvious. The majority here believe they are right, no matter what the circumstance is or how much information is presented. In addition, the stance many take will consistently shift if doing so helps their own argument. If someone disagrees (for any reason), then they must be ridiculed and beaten down. After all... an opinion that differs from your own can't have any merit, right?

High school students are more mature than people in this place.

"fairly obvious"? puh-leaze.

My opinions are just that, opinions. I don't think I have "truth" tied to my undies. Whether people like my opinions or not is really none of my business. I find NO MERIT in hate - none whatsoever.

If your opinion is valid, then so is Danno's or anyone else's opinion.

If your assumption here is that all opinions are equal. Well... that isn't true.

Hence the self-righteous hypocrisy rears its ugly head.

Of course all opinions are equal. As Len demonstrated, however, some opinions are meaningless to others. Such closed mindedness does not surprise me.

Such adherence to political correctness doesn't surprise me.

But no - not all opinions are equal. If they were - then could try to make a case for how the moon is made of cheese.

I'm hardly PC and I believe many here know this. :P

All opinions are, in of themselves, equal. If someone believes the moon is made of cheese, fine. That's their opinion and they are entitled to it. I doubt very many people would agree, but agreement or disagreement are not qualifications for anyone's opinion. Sometimes you can't even prove an opinion, but that does not invalidate that opinion. An opinion is someone's belief and stance on an issue, that's all.

If you aren't PC, then why are you pushing politically correct ideas?

Opinions have little value if they're proven definitively, factually and conclusively wrong; related to which is whether or not anyone agrees with them.

A certain amount of consensus gives rise to certain dialogs. If that were not the case we would not be having discussions about gay marriage, because homosexuality would likely still be considered criminal, and something to be ashamed of.

Its the exact same reason why there aren't mainstream debates about polygamy, for example, because there is no underlying acceptance of that lifestyle or what it represents.

Opinions, by their very nature, are subjective.

No $hit.

So let me get this straight: I'm criticized for being politically correct because I wish to view opinions of all types as equal (whether or not I personally agree with them), but if someone is in favor of same sex marriage, they are not inherently politically correct by wishing to give everyone equality, but anyone who disagrees with that stance is, by definition, full of illogical and ideological hate.

Wow.

Wow.

In a general sense - if you're accepting all opinions as equal, then you're accepting as legitimate things like racist hate speech.

Wow indeed.

PP I think he's parsing a bit here. Not saying he agrees with an opinion but just saying it's 'equal', whatever that means.

Everyone has free speech - that doesn't automatically make what someone says correct, legitimate or equal.

I'd agree with the first two: just because someone has an opinion, that doesn't mean their statements are necessarily correct or legitimate. However, the basis for their opinion is completely equal to anyone else's opinion, regardless of subject matter.

As I've said several times now, I disagree with Danno's stance on same sex marriage. I think it should be legalized. However, my opinion in that matter is worth no more or no less than his.

Well there's nothing correct or incorrect about asserting the stand that gheys shouldn't be allowed to marry. It's simply not something that can be proven or unproven.

You're right it can't - but then neither can politics or ideological concepts like justice.

What does that mean exactly?

It means they're not right or wrong for believing whatever it is they believe. I might think someone's opinion is idiotic, but they still have the right to that opinion and on the very surface, their opinion is as equally valid as mine.

But that's meaningless. Noone here is trying to (or more importantly - has the capability to) squash anyone's free speech (such as it exists on a privately run message board).

So in that sense there's nothing wrong with tearing down opinions we don't agree with.

In the context of our constitutional rights, it most certainly can be incorrect....the 14th Amendment - equal protection under the law.

If it was that much of a slam and dunk, it would have been slammed and dunked by now.

Man is made by his belief. As he believes, so he is.
