I have used OrthoTriCyclen in the past (aka The Pill). I used it for about 5 years and it worked perfectly fine the entire time.

In July 2008 I got the Mirena IUD. That was when I relocated to Germany to be with my (now) husband and I didn't see taking 1-3 years worth of pills as an option.

As already noted, everyone's experiences with birth control are different. YOUR body will react different than everyone else's.

However, from the experiences with the Mirena IUD posted, all you see are bad reviews. Here is a good one:

I have no children so I had to get my IUD placed while I was on my menstrual cycle. That in itself is a little "barrier" to get over but most doctors have absolutely no problem with it. It's their job and they wouldn't be doing it if they don't like it. You CAN "shop around" for a doctor that you like. I encourage you to do so.

Getting the actual IUD inserted DID hurt. It's kind of like an intense menstrual cramp, but it really only lasts for about a minute. The pain will subside and you will feel fine.

My IUD has hormones, so, it is necessary after you get it put in to "walk it off" and get your blood moving. I would say a good time to wait to drive (for example) is 20 minutes.

I have had no problems with my IUD whatsoever. I have not gained weight (due to the IUD anyways!) like a lot of people do with "the shot."

My first 6 months, which is generally how long it takes to develop a "normal menstrual cyce," was a breeze. Just make sure you have tampons, pads, panty liners, etc. always in your home for spotting. I never found the spotting to be a "nuissance," rather, a way to know that my IUD was working.

I have now reached 8 months and I finally have a normal schedule and can look at the calendar and know when I am going to start my cycle. I am very happy that I chose to get the Mirena IUD and feel comfortable knowing that when my husband and I choose to have a child, I can take it out and have no problems.

The ONLY side effect that I have had that I don't like is more ACNE than usual. However, that is not mean that you will have it. Just make sure to clean your face daily (of course) to avoid having this problem.

This is a very helpful thread, thank you for starting it.

For anyone who suffers from migraines (not, thankfully the ones that have an aura - those don't mix so well with BC hormones) and used one of the forms of implant: have you noticed any impact on your headaches?

I ask only because I tried moving to a lower dose of BCP last year, which meant switching types, and it really kicked me in the pants (or rather the head!) migraine wise.

Try looking at the Mirena website.

It's hard to go by other women's experiences, because every woman reacts differently to different types of birth control. Just look at their information and see if it's right for you.

I second childress_london on that, but I can give you my experience. I got Mirena over a year ago. I hated it in the beginning. I got horrible cramps and spotting very often. It was like I would have my period every 2 weeks for almost a week and a half. I seriously considered getting it removed almost daily. I stuck it out and things have smoothed themselves out. About 4 months ago my period stopped (funny right after I got back from Jordan & being with my SO). I was scared I was pregnant, but just turned out that I wasn't and my periods decided to cease. I still get a little cramping, but no period. I love the fact that I don't have to remember taking anything. Now my only con is that the pill helped keep my skin nice & pimple free so now I have to find other ways to keep the bumps under control. So I guess its a toss up...pimples or periods???? Lol.

But reallly the best thing for you to do would be do as much research as possible and talk to your doctor. I will say, it is a tad painful when they put it in. Message me if you want to talk more about it.

Britbird, actually a lot of migraines are associated with birth control hormones. Did your doctor never suggest you try quitting the hormones and going to condoms or diaphragms?
