"Hoods" just don't seem the type of places where one would strike up conversations about pedigree dogs :P

I think the OP was having a bit of fun as its too OTT to take seriously. Reminds me of a Phil Hendrie radio skit where he pretended to be a man who forced his wife to pee in a coke can because he didn't want to stop in Pomona.

Just what are the odds that the name "Coonhound" would come up on your next visit to the hood?

Do you make the Hood-trips often?

What are the nature of these trips?

I work "in the hood" fairly often, yet I never seem to have conversations with

people ready to fly off the handle. Of course I am not jacking my jaw out on the street corner neither.

If you are worried about "Attacks" and "safety", I suggest you stay out of the HOOD, especially at night.

Indeed a wise post, Danno.

I live surrounded by 'hood' and yet to have any issues with using derogatory language of any sort. Perhaps today I can try to use some of these silly terms and get back to all of you here.

Oh but you are quite mistaken PD... the hood is the place to talk about 'dogs.'

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

I did alot of my growing up in the Seattle area, Des Moines. I have family and friends in that area and I bring my dog everywhere I go. Its not a far stretch to think that on my visit somebody might ask what kind of dog I have and me responding "its a redbone coonhound."

Since acquiring my coonhound I have made one trip back to Seattle and the breed of my dog has not caused me any harm. I was using south central as a example. Underling point is just become informed of the word before you throw it around. Maybe the next time I say coonhound and I get a wierd look I will now know why they gave me a wierd look and inform them that it is actually a breed of dog(if there is time before the a$% kicking begins, lol) and that some redneck southerners are to blame for making it also a derogatory term for blacks.

No need to pick my example apart, I think I have a valid point, just become informed so that you can inform. Lets unite and keep the stupid people to a minimum.

Now that's a racist remark, for those that are keeping tabs. You should go down to "The Hood" and declare that on the street corner.

Actually, only a select percentage of Cajuns (last I checked, "surrender-monkey" was a term specifically applied to the largely-Caucasian French from whom Cajuns are distantly-descented) would even be bothered, and almost no African-Americans (very very few will at all acknowledge French blood).

You're way too fixated on receiving an "a$% kicking".

If you get accosted in a bad area it won't be because of exchanging pleasantries about your dog - they'll kick your #### anyway because they want to rob you.

Ok, I didnt see it that way and was using it as a example. I did not want that statement over shadowing my point but it seems that it has, sigh and it was such a good point.

Your point seems to be that its on you to research the word so that you don't "become a victim".

What is obvious (again) is that you have no control over the people you meet (unless you deliberately hang around it bad areas where you're likely to find trouble) and similarly have no control over their behaviour.

Eh, you do remember a posting guideline PD-- "generally quote the post you're responding/riposting, as it can be confoozling otherwise"? (hard to tell whether you'd responded to looking up or Joe 6pack)

Yes that is a point I was making. Be informed because stupid people will do stupid things for stupid reasons and its up to me to look out for number 1

I have control over there behavior when it comes to me. In the sense that if I dont make it easy to be mugged chances are that the mugger will mug somebody else that is easier. You have some control of ones behavior when it comes to you, protect yourself take precautions. I will think twice the next time im in Seattle and somebody asks my what kind of dog I have, I will evaluate the situation and take it from there. If I think it might be constrewed the wrong way and dont feel like explaining it or whatnot I will just say "its a redbone hound dog". To you that is me being paranoid, to me that is me using common sense.

I remember awhile back that a stewardess got herself in a sticky situation when it came to seating 2 passengers. I dont remember the details but I think they both wanted the window seat and the the stewardess way of solving this was to go ini mini miney moe catch a tiger by the toe. Upon saying that the black passenger got very angry at her. I learned from this situation what the stewardess learned and that is that it was orignally catch a ni$%r by the toe. I dont think it was right or justified for the passenger to get so upset considering the context and the situation. Nothing serious happened to the stewardess, I think the passenger tried to sue the airlines. A taxi cab driver in south central might not have been as fortunate had he used this as a way to determine who was going to ride in his cab. I am informed of this, this is good. I will take this little nugget of info. and use it to my advantage.
