Attention British Airways passengers

I have been looking into flying to Atlanta in July for good. So i decided that i might find the price of excess baggage and take a third bag with me this time. It is after all a very long trip i am going on. So i looked on British Airways website to see if it had an idea of the cost for excess bags.

I learned that they are changing the rules on baggage, and doing it in July.

Hand baggage allowances are changing from 5 July 2006

All passengers will be able to carry one standard-sized bag and one briefcase, laptop computer bags or equivalent on all flights.

The maximum size of the bag, 56cm x 45cm x 25cm (22in x 18in x 10in) has been set in line with the UK Department for Transport recommendations.

Passengers must be able to lift their bag unaided into the aircraft overhead locker.

Briefcases, laptop computer bags or equivalent must fit under the seat in front.

Free checked baggage allowances

A single allowance system based on the number of bags that can be checked in will be introduced from 11 October 2006.

FIRST, Club World, Club Europe and World Traveller Plus

Passengers will be able to check two bags into the aircraft hold free of charge.

World Traveller*, Euro Traveller and UK Domestic

Passengers will be able to check one bag into the aircraft hold free of charge.

Yikes 1 bag......I have a hard enough time with 2 and thats just a 2 week visit ....

Most US airlines have already changed their rules too. One bag is a bit tight. Typical BA! Carry-ons need to be monitored more than anything IMO.

yeah the carry on part of that is totally fine. I agree with that because it annoys me when there is no room for my little rucksack and you see people with suitcases in the overhead locker.

I just reread that and noticed that the checked baggage doesn`t change until October.

What a bummer that they are being so stingy with their allowances! I flew with them in September last year and I had 3 suitcases, they said they only allow 2 but didnt charge me for the 3rd one as they saw I was moving out here! Who knows, you may get a nice check in clerk!

From what I am reading, I understand that there will be an allowance for checked in baggage, but they do not specify what this is going to be or how many bags.suitcases can yu check... I might be wrong, but it seems to me that they are going down the route of people being allox X amount of kilos per passenger instead of number of bags and kgs per each of them... Not sure...

Try phoning them up and asking how much cargo would be, or send some by UPS or www.excessbaggage.com, just a thought

I just thought I'd resurrect this topic as I stumbled across it whilst looking for info on excess baggage and noticed something wasn't quite right about it.

Yabasta, you have misread the details from British Airways about the change to checked-in luggage.

*World Traveller passengers travelling to or from the US, Canada, Caribbean, Nigeria, Brazil and Mexico will continue to be allowed two checked bags in line with the local government regulations.

I read the whole topic about the changes the other day and got a bit worried that we would only be allowed 1 peice per person, but my worries were unnecessary when I read the bit above.

Yeah I checked it out as well. You are still allowed 32kgs per suitcase (2 each person) and this will change at some point in October...

It is changing in October though. I did mention in this thread that i read it wrong. I thought it was July for everything originally.

No worries Yabasta.

Luckily, according to the BA website, the changes happening in October won't affect those travelling in economy to the USA, Caribbean, Nigeria, Brazil and Mexico, as this is in line with the local government regulations to allow 2 peices per person. I think the major change to ALL flights will be just the hand luggage.
