West Virginia could see 14,400 jobs created by the highway slice of the pending federal stimulus legislation, state lawmakers were told Monday.

...

West Virginia's expected share of highway stimulus funding would cover a fraction of the $970 million worth of ready-to-go road and bridge projects that Gov. Joe Manchin outlined for the Obama administration earlier this year. Manchin listed 139 such projects, with 15 on the West Virginia Turnpike and the rest on the Division of Highways' road system.

The list largely reflects preservation efforts - repairing, cleaning and painting bridges and repaving roads.

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

Is that the best you have Dean? Put some thought into it bro! How about this:

The money will be used to replace all Interstate signs to read:

Welcome to West Virginia: 1,808,344 People, 15 Last Names!

I am a West Virginian ya' know!

Manchin is a Chopfvck. This is what's important there:

Manchin: Make 'Wild Wonderful West Virginia' official slogan again

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — Gov. Joe Manchin wants to go retro when it comes to West Virginia's welcome slogan.

Manchin added his two cents worth to a statewide telephone and online poll that seeks to determine whether the state should adopt a permanent greeting. If that's what state residents want, the governor said, he favors going back to an old phrase first adopted in 1975: "Wild Wonderful West Virginia."

"He's always been a supporter of that phrase and thinks if we're going to have a permanent slogan that should be it," Manchin spokeswoman Lara Ramsburg said Monday.

The "Wild Wonderful" slogan ended in 1991 during former Gov. Gaston Caperton's administration. After that, the state's welcome signs just said "Welcome to West Virginia."

When Manchin outfitted about 107 signs last year with the phrase "West Virginia Open for Business," members of the Republican Party called the slogan cheesy. A West Virginia University student later collected about 15,000 signatures in an online petition aimed at changing it.

At the time, administration officials said the signs would remain up for the time being but that the phrase could easily be replaced.

Ramsburg said she did not know how much the state paid to install the "Open for Business" signs, but the signs were scheduled to be replaced anyway. The estimated cost of changing them is about $50,000.

Two weeks ago, Manchin announced plans for the poll, saying it should be up to the people of West Virginia to choose a permanent welcome slogan, if that's what they want.

Votes can be cast online at one of three websites: www.wvgov.org, www.wv.gov or www.wvtourism.com. State residents can also vote by telephone at 1-866-SLOGAN-4.

Up to 60,000 votes are expected to be cast by the time the poll ends at midnight Wednesday. As of Tuesday, at least 48,000 votes had been cast, Ramsburg said.

If voters agree to a permanent slogan, state officials plan to hold a second poll, probably beginning in late October, on the three to five most popular slogan nominations.

Manchin intends to ask lawmakers to formalize the poll results during next year's regular legislative session.

And how could we ever forget Uncle A. James Manchin (A.J. to his friends)?

HEADLINERS; Cutting Losses

West Virginia's State Treasurer, A. Last weekend, he retired after 41 years in politics, avoiding an impeachment trial in the State Senate stemming from a loss of $279 million in a state fund. As investigations continued into the activities of the $2.5-billion fund, which pooled the short-term assets of local governments and some retirement funds and invested them in securities like Treasury bills, Mr. Manchin blamed subordinates for making risky investments, explaining, ''I'm not a lightweight, but I'm not a financial genius.'' Mr. Manchin, whose annual pension of $24,000 is intact, said, ''I'm 62, and it's time to say goodbye.''

The state is quite nice. The people are also quite nice and down to earth.

Too bad they broke away from Virginia many years ago. Financially it was the dumbest move possible. States that small are simply not viable unless they have a high tech industry or a vast amount of expensive resources.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

Case in point, Rhode Island.

So, how many more Robert C. Byrd highways, bridges, tunnels, buildings, etc, does West Virginia need?

If I recall he was also the guy who had the coastguard head office move to WV. Being that WV is surrounded by so much ocean and all.

You guys have limits on the president's term but Senators who should be rotated to minimize corruption, they can stay in as long as they like. Only in America. :bonk:
