THE EMPLOYMENT SITUATION: JANUARY 2009

Nonfarm payroll employment fell sharply in January (-598,000) and the unemployment rate rose from 7.2 to 7.6 percent, the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor reported today.

From BLS's Alternative measures of labor underutilization page:

The U-6 index stands at 13.9% in January 2009. U-6 is defined as "unemployed, plus all marginally attached workers, plus total employed part time for economic reasons, as a percent of the civilian labor force plus all marginally attached workers". Put simply, this includes workers who are "discouraged" and those who want full-time work but can only find part-time work.

Obama: It's 'inexcusable' to delay stimulus after new jobs report

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama says the latest jobless numbers demand action and it's "inexcusable and irresponsible" for Congress to delay on his economic recovery package.

In prepared remarks for a White House appearance, the president pointed to the unemployment report for January. Employers slashed payrolls by 598,000, the most since the end of 1974, catapulting the unemployment rate to 7.6 percent.

Obama said he is certain senators are reading the same numbers. He said he hopes they share his urgency to act and pass his recovery package.

While his bill isn't perfect, Obama said it is "absolutely necessary." He said "broadly speaking, it is the right size. It is the right scope."

I would think a sure indicator of how bad the economy is tanking is how much time we spend in the OT area dealing with our boredom! But I have an excuse today: IT'S RAINING!
