At the gym last night - there was an e-fit picture of a guy wanted in connection with sexual assault.

Apparently he'd grabbed a woman's buttocks and run away...

Presumably, if caught, he would be considered a "sex offender".

They recently put up one of those huge digital billboards on Rt 287 (southbound, near Exit 4 or 5) with pictures and names/ages of wanted rapists.

Man is made by his belief. As he believes, so he is.

Sure there are some percentage of guys who get off on "taking it" from a scared crying woman or girl but to blanket all rape with this one motive... is lazy.

Come to the real world: Guys have a strong drive for sex, some will risk anything or hurt anyone to get what they want.

Rape IS about power - given that the rapist is forcing the woman to submit to his sexual authority, thereby removing authority from the victim.

rape is a term ill defined. the motivations behind it are even less well so.

the adrenal gland makes simple steriods that are converted by other glands in the body into hormones. the male testes convert simple steriods into a complex hormone we know as testosterone. some of that testosterone exists in a state known as "free testosterone". men with excess free testosterone are prone to violence and aggression of all types, and have high levels of sexual desire. seratonin levels are closely related to testosterone levels. max them both in a man, and the fellow will take risks normal people wouldn't, and engage in aggression and sexual act more freely. sometimes rape is just psychiatry and physiology shoved into a blender.

That's really a "chicken or egg" rationale.

Certainly there is a lot of anger involved, social alienation, hatred of women - either through social retardation and inability to form relationships. I don't think anyone's pretending that its a "simple" issue - but there are clearly psychological issues at work for people who do things like this.

I don't think anyone's pretending that its a "simple" issue - but there are clearly psychological issues at work for people who do things like this.

sometimes there are psychological issues (your example). sometimes there are sociological issues (rape in the altered societal structure of a war zone or prison). sometimes there are cultural issues (rape of non-muslims by muslims). sometimes it's psychiatry and physiology mixed (youthful exuberance). sometimes it's a mix of all or some of the possibilities.

each case is unique, in terms of responsibility, level of force, method, motivation, etc.

then there are the "sex crimes" that are not rape, like pissing on a car tire in a parking lot cause you're too drunk to find the john.
