Can someone who has flown on Northwest from Manila to the states give a step by step detail how to transit in Tokyo? My fiance ask me to post this as she seems a little nervous about changing planes in Tokyo.

This is not a problem, you never leave the terminal in Tokyo, and her visa to the USA allows transit through Tokyo.

TWOV (Transit Without Visa):

Visa required, except for Those continuing their journey to a third country on the same day. If transit time is less than 72 hours.

Visa required, except for Those holding a Transit-Pass issued if:

Additional Information:

  • All visitors must hold onward or return ticket, proof of sufficient funds to cover duration of their stay in Japan and documents required for their next destination.
  • An unexpired visa in an expired passport may be used.

I have done this many tiimes, >25.

When she leaves the plane she needs to take all her personal belongings and carry-on bags. Yes even if the next flight is the same number

Then follow the signs to international connecting flights.

She will go back through security. They will want to see her passport and a boarding pass or ticket to the next international flight. In her case this is boarding pass showing her flight to the POE in the US.

After security she will then need to look on the flight information board for her next flight # to see the gate and the departure time.

She needs to be at the gate 1 hour prior

This information is right on as I have done it 10 times and tell your wife to follow the crowd of people leaving the plane to continue on to the next part of her flight. The plane stops in there to fuel and get cleaned or just another plane with the same flight number. It is very easy and simple to get off the plane in Japan and then get back on. There will be many people on the flight to help her if she just asks for help.

When I returned to the states, I went from Manila to Tokyo on JAL, then on Continental to Houston. There were several staff members waiting when we exited the plane in Tokyo to guide us where we needed to be Each of them were holding signs for different connecting flights. All we did was follow the correct person, it was quick and painless. they all spoke decent English so there was no problem communicating with them. Your Fiance will probably have an easier transit than mine because we had to be bussed to another terminal but they didn't loose any of us.

She's right  I just arrived here in the US last Jan. 17 and my flight was NW #2 with a stopover in Narita. Just tell her to follow the sign for connecting flights. After security she can check which will be her gate number for her connecting flight among the monitors ( mine was gate 22). Good luck and have safe trip.

One thing you will want to remind her of, is she cannot take any beverages off of her first flight and bring them on to the second flight. She will pass through security and the xray machines again.
