that is all well and good and I completely understand but I am sure it would be possible for someone to fake their way through to getting a license...

so I am just curious... lets say you have a choice between two people... the first one is licensed but only has 1 or 2 years experience and the 2nd person has no license but has 15+ years experience.. which one would you choose?

Good question. If the person who's been a nanny for over 15 years, but didn't get their license, I would wonder why they didn't, TBH. I'd probably choose the licensed sitter because there are several requirements - criminal background checks, references, finger printing. Although I suppose it is possible for someone to commit fraud with getting a license, but with criminal background checks and finger printing, it would be extremely difficult and highly unlikely.

I didn't get a license because I didn't think it was necessary and a lot of parents ask for background checks, references etc... which is maybe what these parents should have done, if they didn't...

also what if the person had never committed a crime yet before they got their license?

Yeah, a license covers all of that (background checks, references, etc.) - it also helps you as a nanny, IMO. The license must be renewed regularly and I don't know all the details, but say for instance a licensed nanny is later convicted of a felony - that information is sent to the licensing board which would then revoke the license. It's a pretty thorough system. Long gone are the days of just trusting someone with experience. I'm sure most nannies are good people, but it's just not worth the risk not to be overly cautious about who you leave your child with.

Do you have a fingerprint reader at home that you can use to verify that the license holder is who she claims she is?

There are no guarantees whatever way you do it. Some parents molest their children. Most of these types of crime are committed by people who are known to the family it's quite rare for it to be a stranger - presumably because for the most part parents are as careful as they can be about who is looking after their children.

As for the crime described. It's a good thing this person was caught at this early age. I have no idea how he was caught but it is a good thing. I don't know if whatever it is that makes him do this type of thing can be cured/changed but at least he is now in the system and his movements can be monitored.

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .
