I have been asked to co-sponsor and sign an I-864. I am not against doing this but I am concerned about something.

I have read the form and I understand it is to assure the government that the immigrant wont be taking any government benefits. I am 100% positive that wont be the case..

HOWEVER, what if she gets into an accident or has to have some sort of hospitalization and/or surgery and didnt have health insurance.

Would I be liable for those bills? What if it is a government funded hospital?

I have no issues with assuring she will never be on welfare or anything like that, but medical bills can be HUGE and that is a HUGE concern to me...

Can anyone on here answer this for me?

Thank you!

You only sign a contract with the government, not with her or any third party company. Whatever bills she has and whatever debts she makes, you will not be held responsible for those as she is the only one responsible.

The whole sponsorship is just to assure the government that if she has no money and needs wellfare, that the government can claim the money for the wellfare at your address.

Debts, as far as I know, do not get paid by the government (I wish it was lol).

Anyways, besides this all, you might still tell her that health insurance is something that she should really get, it really is important. What if she is in serious need and the hospital decides not to help her because she has no insurance or money to pay for (I've read more than once about these things).. it is ridiculous but it happens, people actually die because of this.

Hey, where did you get this info? While asking my joint sponsor to sign for me, I looked everywhere for this kind of info...

Are you 100% that the whole joint sponsor thing is only about the welfare money?

Btw, is it bad if you ask for unemployment money although it is an insurance your company paid for you?

It is listed on more than one site, but here's a link to the USCIS one: http://www.uscis.gov/i-864

Purpose of Form :To show that the applying immigrant has enough financial support to live without concern of becoming reliant on U.S. government welfare.
so in other words, in stead of giving welfare, the sponsor basically will have to provide an adequate income to the beneficiary of that form when he/she has no other source of income to live from...

it is quite some responsibility if you ask me

hmm, you're right, I think the welfare is the only thing that concerns the government:

So I guess if you have worked and get unemployed, you can ask for unemployment money even if you're on a conditional green card, and it won't affect the removal of conditions?

I cannot give a clear answer on that but basically it should not matter as the USCIS is basically only interested if you can stay there without becoming a financial liability for the government.. when you go from conditional to permanent resident, then you're still contracted through the I-864. So theoretically it shouldn't matter and/or affect the removal of the conditions.

yeah, that's a tough one. nobody clearly knows how to answer if unemployment benefits for the beneficiary affects the removal of conditions, as it is insurance paid by the company, but also government money.
