We just had this issue come up with my husband's Jamaican passport. I googled renewing Jamaican passport in the US and it sent me to the right place. I downloaded the form and the instructions, mailed it off to the DC embassy, and am now waiting for it to come back.

Just be careful where you mail it....we only had a few choices. And, the pictures are a little different then what I am used to. We HAD to use Sears or the picture people for the his pictures. It's what the JA embassy requires.

Good luck to you.

 I was on my way to a meeting when I posted this topic this morning(when I just reread it..its completely rediculous!!haha)

What I meant to actually ask..are what options do I have? would it be easier to have her father renew it while shes visiting in toronto? I'm a bit concerned about her being without a passport..she goes back and forth so much!) or do I HAVE to renew it from the states?

I get sooooooooooo confused!!!!!

thanx to anyone who gets past my first post

You HAVE to mail the passport in to get it renewed. They will send it back with the new one, and have punched a hole in the middle of the old one or something like that to show it's no longer valid.

So, if she is staying in Toronto for a while, that would be fine to renew it there. Otherwise, you will definately want to do it from the US.

It could take weeks to get it back. Up to a few months.

You have to renew it before it expires. Where is not really that important, the when is.

Go to the CIC website www.cic.gc.ca and see what they say about passports. Also check Foreign Affairs Canada.

Google is indeed your friend.

Yes, WHERE is cause she will be without while waiting.

Do it sooner rather than later. Methinks there will be another delay in processing passports when the travelling by land and sea requirements formally go through June 1, 2009 (you will no longer be able to use just photo ID to cross).

Oh, shoot.....I forgot it's a little more lax going north. Sorry. Then, I suppose it doesn't matter where. But, I do agree with the sooner rather then later. You never know what complications you may encounter.

My friend works at a passport office and she told me that if you renewed or got your passport in Canada before you can do a quick renewal form and they will process it in a few days, but this means you will have to go to a Canadian Passport Office in Canada to do so. I assume that you are in the US now so I would go onto the website and download a renewal form and send it in. Passport photo can be signed by anyone with a valid Canadian passport as long as it's being renewed. If you let it expire I think you will have to get a non-family member professional to sign it (ie. doctor, lawyer, accountant, engineer, etc.).

My passport expired shortly before I had to attend a family wedding back home in Vancouver. We ended up crossing into Canada through border crossing after flying into Seattle. During the chaos of the wedding, I had my photos taken, and we applied for my passport in person; we paid a bit extra to have it expedited, but I didn't really trust it being sent back to my US address, so I picked it up from the office. Since I was applying in person, I was allowed to use the Simplified Renewal form and had my mother as my guarantor. The folks at the office were completely understanding about my situation, helped me figure out the best solution, and had absolutely no issues with renewing my passport; they allow you to renew it for up to a year past the expiration date before they get twitchy. I highly recommend this route if you're able to do so :)

The other alternative, if you aren't able to go back to Canada to get it done, is to have it mailed to Passport Canada in Quebec - that's the only place they'll accept the mail-in applications - however, getting the photos done properly and signed is a bit of a hassle especially with the guarantor rules, and you have to mail the old passport back, so she'll be without for awhile.

Okay so, say I'm going back at Christmas time for 10 days. Keeping in mind all the days that the office is probably closed until Jan. 2nd, Do you think it would be safe to get a new passport? I want my passport in my married name so I can stop having to bring my marriage certificate with me everywhere. How much does it cost to expedite it? (Im obviously too lazy to look into any of this  )

"...My hair's mostly wind,

My eyes filled with grit

My skin's white then brown

My lips chapped and split

I've lain on the prairie and heard grasses sigh

I've stared at the vast open bowl of the sky

I've seen all the castles and faces in clouds

My home is the prairie and for that I am proud…

If You're not from the Prairie, you can't know my soul

You don't know our blizzards; you've not fought our cold

You can't know my mind, nor ever my heart

Unless deep within you there's somehow a part…

A part of these things that I've said that I know,

The wind, sky and earth, the storms and the snow.

Best say that you have - and then we'll be one,

For we will have shared that same blazing sun." - David Bouchard

Urgent (24 hours) is $70. Express (2-9 business days) is $30. For either service, you'll have to show proof of travel, like an itinerary so they know when you need it by.

I think we applied for my passport via Express on a Tuesday and managed a Friday morning pick-up.
