SSN CONCERN

I came to the states on K1 visa and we didnt apply for my SSN til we get married. We got married last OCtober 25 and today we went to the SSA to apply for my SSN and they've said,they wont be able to give me my social security number til i present to them my residence certificate, what the heck. All we knew is that,it won't be a problem as long as your I-94 is not yet expired or at least applied for it 76 days from arrival. Could anyone please enlighten us about this and can we find a website,stating about all this,so that they will know it also. Please help us

The clerk at the SSA was wrong. You are employment authorized based on your class of admission (K1) and eligible for SSN until you are within 2 weeks of your I-94 expiring.

You may have to talk to a supervisor or advise the clerk of the SSA rules regarding K1 admission.

My husband was kinda pissed off because of that,because this representative keeps on telling us that we have to wait for my resident certificate and we all know how long would that be. I guess they don't really know about all this and they are giving us a bunch of #######.

I would go back to the office and ask for a manager if you again have a problem.

Tell them to look at RM 00203.500 C1 and getting married does not invalidate your K-1 status.

we made it today, we looked at their website last night and printed out the information they don't know at all,shame on them,it's on their own website.. It went well today and my SSN will be here in two weeks time..thanks so much
