I have seen this question pop up from time a lot. Here is our experience in New Jersey.

The DMV told us flat out no, they will not accept the extension letter and expired Green Card.

We went to our Infopass appointment in Newark NJ today and we didn't have to say a word.

Handed the extension letter, expired GC and passport to the person in the window. She said they will

stamp the passport. about an hour and a half later my wife had an I-551 stamp in her passport

that is valid for one year.

Just for info, we sent our application in mid August and got the extension letter in the first half of September.

Good luck everyone.

David.

Yes, the NJ DMV is super annoying. My husband's licensed expired while he was waiting for the green card the first time. He was legally allowed to be in the country, but because his student visa was expired and he didn't have the green card yet, he couldn't renew his license. Meanwhile, we applied for EAD *only* so he could use it to get his license. Once he got that and went back to the DMV, they yelled at him for letting his license expire.
