Hello everyone!

I was reading on the 1-864 form today that the duration of sponsorship lasts until the immigrant attains U.S. citizenship. If we are using the K-1 visa, marrying, and then applying for permanent residence status, at what point is the sponsor cleared of their liabilities? I guess the question is when will my fiancee become a U.S. citizen, after the permanent residence application is approved (so how long does that normally take?), or is it after the two year conditional period after marrying, or are they one and the same?

Also, if I am having a friend co-sponsor with me, are they considered a joint sponsor, or is that specifically for people living within the same household and combining incomes to meet the threshold, or does it not really matter?

Thanks so much for any help!

In the case of the I-134 used for the visa, the sponsorship ends when status changes, that is when the NON-Immigrant becomes an immigrant and gets green-card.

The Co-sponsor is not obligated to also be Joint sponsor when filing I-485 after marriage and adjusting status.

The visa pititioner (Fiancee) US Citizen Spouse MUST sponsor, and if financial situation changes they can adjust status WITHOUT the joint sponsor.

NOTE I-864 is NOT used for the visa. I-134 is used for K-Visas. I-864 is for sponsoring a GREEN-card, it is used for adjustment of status.
