Hi, I am working as an IT consultant in US (with L1 visa) My passport was accidentally water damaged. But the characters are clearly visible even in my I-94 and Visa. Actually i planned to apply for a duplicate passport through Indian consulate Washington DC. For that i need to send my original damaged passport to them. But i have a question like, If i send my damaged passport to indian consulate, Will i get my original passport along with my duplicate passport? Anyone have idea on this? Because my visa stamping will not be in my duplicate passport. I tried to call the embassy helpline number, but i didn't get any response. Please help me in this regard.

the indian embassy in washington dc will ask you for ur original damaged passport and issue a new one to you. the old passport will be stammped as "Cancelled" at the back page. after this the old passport and the new passport will be returned to you. i am not sure how the L1 visa and I-94 will be handled.

If your passport has been lost, stolen, altered, mutilated, damaged, or your name has changed, you should request a new U.S. passport as soon as possible. Note that individuals with altered or mutilated passport may risk prosecution under the law: Section 1543 of Title 22 of the U.S. Code.
