Criminal Record Check

Hi Everyone!

I am just in the process of getting together everything for my Sweetie so that I can send him what he needs from me for the I-129F package. I am one of those weird people who likes to be organized and prepared for everything. I have been reading some posts about criminal record checks, etc. I am wondering if there is anything I should be doing ahead of time in case we are asked about a criminal record for me. I have no criminal record in Canada (or anywhere else for that matter...hehehe... :P ) but am just looking at any possible catches I may run into...

Thanks!

Tiffany

June 19th, 2006 - I129-F sent via Fedex (courtesy of my Honey's work) to arrive using next day delivery

Mid- July - Found out I129-F never left his company but is lost there.....need to gather and try again

August 2006 - Still waiting...maybe not the I-129F route anymore

If no criminal record, its then pretty simple, you just require the Canada wide background check. For most of Canada your local RCMP detchment does it. In the great Toronto area its the Commisionaires http://www.commissionaires.ca/

One can call your local detchment and see how long they take to issue it. Some are in minutes some take a week, some are free, some charge a fee, and 1 would think the appearance would be similar? nope!! Some look profesional, some look like a 2 yr old put it together!! So give them a call and they can tell you what you need.

Soem on the board have used local police forces with success. If you do go that route enusre it states on the paper that it is Canada wide. on my pkg it stated it had to be RCMP (or commisionaires) but that was awhile back and may have changed. But if you have a RCMP detachment close by, I would use them, but thats only my opnion!! Best of luck

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Not exactly sure where your at in the process but, from your timeline looks like your just filing. I'm not an expert but the record check does need to be recent.............maybe within 6 months so I'd inquire about how long your local office will take to get it for you but hold off actaully getting it until you get you packet 3 from the US consulate here in Canada. I have seen other post that the consulates like them to be as recent as possible. Just a thought to save you from doing it twice or paying the fee twice. Or showing up for your interview and having them say it's to old, the process is long enough without having things delayed. I know it's hard to sit and wait I was te same way wanted to be doing as much as possible to be ready. Hope this helps and good luck on your journey, hope it's a smooth, painless and quick one.

:yes::thumbs:

Tiffany, I like to be organized and well-prepared, too. :) I got a police certificate too early in the game because I was "misinformed" (had not found VJ at that time) about the length of processing times. Anyway, I applied for a newer one recently to go with the DS-230 (for CR-1). And I'll need another one if I get an interview for the K-3 before the CR-1 application gets to the consulate in Montreal.

And as Flames9 suggested, give the RCMP a call to inquire about costs and processing times in your area.

Police certificate must be less than a year old on the day of the interview. I got mine on July 14, 2005 ( I am one of those people who like to be organized too). My interview was on May 09,2006 and it was o.k. I even sent them e-mail to clarify that the date is o.k., and they responded. This is what was in their e-mail.

"P/C Certificates – must be less than a year old. We are currently booking the second week of March. "

(That was from Vancouver Consulate)

That's all you need if you only lived in Canada. I lived in two other countries and had to have police certificates for those. And for one of those countries they specifically also asked Municipal Court Certificate that there isn't a current investigation. I guess they have all these different requirements for different countries.
