well, by your timeline, you have to wait almost 3 years to become a US citizen so if you plan to travel out of the US within those years, then you would need to renew your passport.

You have a long way to become a dual citizen, you need to naturalize to be come a US citizen, that can only happen after you have been a green-card holder for at least 3 years when married to a US citizen, or 5 years if not married to a US citizen.

Also, just because you don't renew the Canuck passport DOES NOT mean that you lose your Canuck citizenship--to do so, you have to explicitly file CIT-0302-E form with Canadian Embassy/Consulate.
