Well, something about it has to be expensive. Maybe the gold leaf?

I have had some fab dal dishes.

Did anyone read Life of Pi? That is a bizarre story and I am not sure if I really liked it. (Confirmed tangent!)

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

Ah, well my parents made me eat...

Actually, there is only one thing I really refuse to eat and that's tripe. Tripe and onions, my dad loved it. Gruesome!

All I can say is that Devon Ave here in Chicago boasts an Indian, Pakistani, and Afghani community nicely integrated. Food options abound and as far as I know there is very little tension spilt over from the home territories' old conflicts.

Yeap that's how it is in NJ too.

I still haven't been to any indian restaurants in NJ outside of that Raagini place on Route 22 (the dinner menu is extremely pricey) and a small place off one of the main avenues in Manhattan.

Indian/Pakistani food is the equivalent of Mexican food in the UK. There are restaurants all over the place.

I like Mexican BTW... but it just doesn't do it for me the way a good curry could.

The best place for Indian food in the tristate area IMHO is Jackson Heights, Queens - in a small area you've got South Indian, Punjabi, Afghani, Nepali. I go there just about every weekend. If you like South Indian then come to my 'hood(Flushing) - near the Ganesh temple there are at least 4 places serving dosas, etc. - I love it but as a good Nepali(by marriage) I need rice once in a while.

Depends how its made... some recipes cook the tripe so much it takes the consistency of soft, velvety meat.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

I'd go up there more but getting there from central jersey is such a PIA.

I'll take your word for it. Actually, I am not sure I could eat whole scorpions on a stick either. If I had to eat insects, I would prefer it if they were disguised in some way so that I couldn't make out what they had been originally :D

Maybe because here often fresh veg has to be shipped from far away - in India/Nepal most everything is locally grown.

My parents used to make me eat dal as a kid so now I hate it. I won't touch it.

no dal bhat tarkaari???? :o:o:o

You wouldn't like my MIL's cooking then....

That's my parents staple. I don't touch it anymore.

Even if it's cooked according to the recipe in The Nepal Cookbook which calls for something like 6 tablespoons of ghee? I made it for my parents last Xmas and it was goooood... but then I imagine rats would taste good cooked in 6 tablespoons of ghee.

Not to mention it's a PIA, I know what you mean.

NYC is like a freaking physical barrier that keeps me from anything beyond it!

In the olden days we had mountain ranges, today we have New York.
