Hi there! ITs entirely up to you when you would want to apply for SSN. If you would apply it during the 90 day period of your stay here in the US, you can apply for SSN but you wont be able to use it for employment purposes. BUT YOU CAN. Then after you got your work permit you can go back to their office and ask to ammend it or to change it and they can allow it for employment purposes. I think it will still be the same SSN. Anyways, I will apply for my SSN once my work permit comes. Good luck to us:-)

Usually it takes a week to get it. But you have to make an appointment to your nearest Social Security office before walking in so you'll know what are the requirements they might ask from you. Here is the link so you can locate one near you and you can call them and make an inquiry or to set an appointment. https://secure.ssa.gov/apps6z/FOLO/fo001.jsp

Sheriff is right... having SSN or not doesn't affect the AOS. But it is suggested that the applicant applies for SSN at least 2 weeks after the arrival. And also, some SSA offices will not allow K1 holders to acquire SSN if the applicant already got married. They will tell the applicant to wait for EAD or greencard. Having said this, you may want to make her get her SSN before you two get married. She will need her passport with I-94 and original birth certificate (they sometimes ask for it). It will take at least 2-3 weeks for the card to arrive in the mail.

Amount of time it takes to be assigned an SSN is going to depend on the amount of time it takes SSA to verify your immigration status. If you are lucky and they can do it while you are in the office, you should have your card within 2 weeks and you can go back to the office the next day to get the number if you don't want to wait for the card.

If they can't verify your status while you are at the office it can take weeks or even months to be assigned an SSN and with K-1 status you could possibly be ineligible to be assigned an SSN based on your K-1 status before your status is verified.

Best thing is to go apply ASAP and generally SSA offices do not schedule appointments for SSN applications.
