Please can some one answer this question.. I will be filing the AOS within the month.. I am very lucky to live in Oklahoma.. and we have to freaking travel to Oklahoma City and take a day off of work to file the AOS in person I guess. But a filipina here is telling Zandy that she can't get her SS # until we files the AOS. It's my understanding she can get one now.. but it will have a stamp on it that will say she can't work? which is ok.. I just want her to have a card.

If I take a day off and take her to the SS office will the issue her a SS card soon? or will we have to wait..

just give it a try KUya Mike,, :)

probably ur state is not strict too like here in NC

I applied my SSn after we got married.

i just presented passport, 1-94, visa, marriage certificate...

Yup it's nice to have ssn because banks, DMV, insurance company etc ... ask for ssn #

you'll have to wait. They will just mail it to your address :) within 2 weeks..

Good luck to ate Zandy's AOS...

I filed my SS application before I got married and had no problems with it. They only asked for my passport. Got my card after 10 days. I had a cousin in Ohio who applied for her SSN after she got married, and didn't apply for the AOS until about 5 months later. She got her SS card 10 days after she applied. Suffice to say, the AOS application was not a requirement. As for the AOS, you don't need to take the day off to apply, just follow and send your petition as directed in the form.

Goodluck.

Removal of Conditions :

August 16, 2010 - Petition received by USCIS Vermont Center

August 20, 2010 - NOA1 received

October 4, 2010 - Biometrics

January 3, 2011 - Permanent 10 yr. Green Card Received.

Mike everyone here is correct.

Zandy can apply for SSN but it will have a stamp that says she cant work. After AOS, you guys can go back to SSA and get a new card without a stamp.

Some people prefers to wait until after AOS so they dont have to go back to get a new card. It's all just preference thing.

The filipina who said you cant apply for SSN probably dealt with a not so knowledgable SSA employee or have only two weeks left before her I-94 expires.

Oh cool! I didn't know that we can already apply for SSN prior sending the AOS docs. We've already filed our AOS application but we would love to get the SSN card sooner just so we can open a joint bank account, do DMV and be able to use his insurance medical and dental benefits (he's already paying for me...) I'll inform my husband about this. Thanks so much for the information :)

A k1 visa holder can apply for SSN by presenting the I-94 but for a K3 visa holder we are not allowed to apply for SSN unless we already have the work permit or the GC.
